When Felix awoke to the bedroom light flashing on at eight in the morning he realized that he was not the only one in his bed. Vinnie was sleeping beside him. In fact, the other boy had Felix in such a tight embrace that he couldn’t even sit up. He struggled to at least free one of his arms, but Vinnie held on tighter. Just as Felix was going to yell at the boy he heard a little giggle. “You’re not even sleeping!” Felix shouted.
Vinnie’s eyes flew open and his lips curled into a smile. “I’m a great actor and I couldn’t help it! I liked waking up with you in my arms, Lucky,” he said.
Felix rolled his eyes. “Oh, shut up.” He finally freed himself from the boy and went to his suitcase to change into his clothes. Then he noticed the gauze taped to his wrist and the yesterday’s events came pouring back to him. “Yesterday was pretty bad wasn’t it?”
“Oh yes, I’m sure it was the worse first day anyone has ever had here,” Vinnie said happily as he stretched out on Felix’s cot. “You’re definitely in the nurse’s naughty books now, Lucky.”
Felix gritted his bicuspids together and glared at Vinnie. “Would you quit smiling for one second of your life?”
Vinnie sat up on the cot and raised an eyebrow at the boy. “What’s so bad about smiling?”
“It gets on my nerves,” Felix mumbled as he changed into his clothes.
“Hmmph, I like you better when you’re drugged up,” Vinnie said as he got off the bed and walked to his side of the room. “At least you were nice to me.”
Felix ignored the boy, and bent down to slip on his shoes.
“And you’re a really good kisser,” Vinnie added.
Felix stood up straight immediately, and glared at the rainbow-haired boy. “You took advantage of me!” He shouted.
“Calm down, Lucky. It was only a kiss, and besides you liked it.” Vinnie winked at Felix, before walking out of the room.
Felix felt like screaming, but he managed to turn it into a muffled growl. He was only in this hellhole for one full day and he already felt more insane than when he arrived. And that goofy, unbelievably wide grin of Vinnie’s wasn’t helping matters.
When Felix made it to the cafeteria he saw Adam and Ralph sitting at a table together. As he walked over to them he passed Vinnie and Olivia sitting at an adjacent table. Olivia had a silver silk scarf wrapped around her head that Vinnie was trying to remove. “Don’t look at me! I’m ‘ideous!” She said in an impressive French accent. I guess she’s not Olivia today, Felix thought as he sat down beside Adam.
Vinnie finally unravelled the scarf from her face to reveal a newly bulging bruise on the top of her cheek bone. The shadow of congealed blood was beginning to spread to her eye socket. “Oliver got mad at me last night. He didn’t mean it though. He’s usually so sweet. He just doesn’t like it when I hang around with that slut Olivia.”
Felix expected Vinnie to laugh at Oliver’s psychotic dilemma, but instead his smile disappeared. “Olive, that looks really bad. You should see a nurse and get some ice on it.” He stood up and pulled a resistant Olive with him. Her floor-length silky, black dress swayed back and forth as the two boys walked to the nurses’ station.
“Who would have expected Vinnie could be so nice?” Felix asked the two boys at the table. Ralph jumped when Felix spoke, as if he didn’t know the boy was there.
Adam stayed as still as possible and slowly turned his head toward Felix. “Vinnie is full of surprises.” Adam’s dark eyes surveyed Felix. “How are you feeling?”
