"It seems we're stuck together for just a little longer." You greet Giyu after running into him outside. It's still early in the night so the moon is rather low in the sky, meaning you'll probably make it to your destination early in the morning.
"It's unlikely that Muzan will still be in the area once we arrive." Giyu takes off quickly with you following after him. "We should get there as soon as possible just in case."
"I've never been to Kumotori Mountain before. Hopefully the search area is small." The chance of catching Muzan is very slim but there's always the possibility of clues or things being left behind. Even if you don't find him you can at least confirm his last known whereabouts.
Giyu simply hums in acknowledgment towards your words as he sprints even faster. Your feet pound lightly against the ground as you match his pace, keeping your breathing even to avoid tiring too quickly. The last thing you need is to be exhausted and have Muzan actually be there.
Hours tick by as you run, the sun slowly peaking over the horizon as night turns to day. You've finally made it to your destination as you trek up the snowy mountain side with little difficulty. The air is thin in your lungs as you push through the snow and you can't help but to wonder how people could live in such places.
The feeling of death lingers in the air as you approach a small home, a gnarly sight greeting you as you get closer. A small child lays in the snow, covered in blood and lifeless while the rest of the family is inside the home. It's a gruesome sight that makes your chest ache but you push the sadness away. It's too late to save them.
"There's tracks leading back down the mountain." You point towards the disturbed snow. It's obvious that there was someone laying next to the boy outside but whoever it is has since left. Perhaps they were taken or managed to get away. Giyu inspects the tracks before taking off back down the mountain to follow them while you linger behind. Part of you knows you should follow him just in case but another part of you wants to bury the family.
With a sigh you bow your head slightly in prayer towards the family before following after Giyu. He's quite a ways down the mountain by the time you find him and the sight is a little surprising to say the least. You climb into a tree to watch from afar as Giyu talks to a young boy while holding a demon in his arm. You can't quite hear what's being said but it's obvious they're arguing.
The young boy bows his head as he cries, Giyu showing clear irritation on his face as he looks down at him. The demon girl in his grasp is still struggling despite having a blade aimed at her. Your eyes widen slightly as Giyu suddenly shoves his sword through her chest causing the boy to lose his mind. He throws a rock at the hashira as he gets up and runs, picking something up off of the ground as he goes.
The boy makes a direct attack towards Giyu suddenly only to fall unconscious as he's hit with the butt of his sword. A snort of amusement leaves you as you watch an axe lodge itself into the tree next to his head, obviously surprising him. The demon girl manages to wriggle her way out of his grasp which forces you to take action. You hop down from the tree to go after her only to stop a few feet away, amazed and confused at the sight in front of you.
She's protecting him.
The girl doesn't seem to take note of your presence as she starts attacking your partner, him weaving as he dodges. You take this moment to check on the unconscious boy, cradling his head in your lap as you make sure he's alright. The boy shifts in your grasp before sitting up, turning to look for his sister. The girl is unconscious on the ground a few feet away with a bamboo strapped to her mouth. It's a strange sight to see, especially when you didn't realize it was happening.
"Go see a man named Sakonji Urokodaki who lives at the foot of Mount Sagiri. Tell him Giyu Tomioka sent you. She seems alright now but do not let her into the sunlight." The young boy seems confused over the hashira's words as he holds his sister in his arms.
You step forward to stand next to Giyu as you smile softly at the boy, wishing him luck as you take off alongside Giyu. You can't help but to glance back at the siblings as you run, curious as to what's different about them. In the many years since you've started slaying demons you've never once seen one protect a human.
"I'm surprised you didn't kill her." You speak up to break the silence, both of you slowing down to a steady pace as you head back towards the estates.
"I could say the same to you." He glances over at you, a hint of amusement in his eye.
You shrug, crossing your arms over your chest to keep warm from the frigid air. "I've never seen anything like that before. Plus, you seemed to put your faith in them so who am I to argue. If she truly is different then everything could be changing."
"I sent them to the man who taught me my water breathing techniques." Giyu answers an unasked question, probably assuming you would have brought it up at some point. "If he wants to protect his sister then he'll have to train to become a demon slayer. I can only hope that Urokodaki agrees to take him in."
"I'm sure if you write to him about the situation he would agree to it." You hum, stretching your arms over your head as your joints pop into place. "I may not have known you very long but I trust your opinion. I'll put my full faith in those two, along with my life. We're breaking a lot of rules by doing this and if they ever mess up our only answer will be death."
"You're willing to put your life on the line for a choice I made?" Giyu questions, furrowing his brows as he looks at you. You smile softly at him before looking ahead towards the horizon, basking in the warmth of the sun.
"I'm willing to put my life on the line for a chance at a different world."
