A few days later your estate is ready for you to move into. On one hand you're excited to have your own place where others won't bother you but on the other hand you know it will be rather lonely without Shinobu and the others constantly bugging you.
You said your goodbyes to everyone early in the morning, a few of the girls being more emotional than others. Kanao had her usual soft smile on her face, not saying anything. Shinobu was smiling as well but you could tell she was a little sad to see you go. Aoi was rather emotionless but still wished you good fortune as you left. The three youngest girls, Sumi, Kiyo and Naho were the most emotional, crying as they hugged you tightly. They were acting as if they were never going to see you again when in reality you would still probably find yourself at the butterfly mansion more often than you would like.
You new estate isn't nearly as large as the butterfly mansion but it's still larger than you expected. There's plenty of rooms which will likely never be used unless you have company over. There's a good chance you'll open your home to the other hashira if they find themselves needing a place to rest after a long journey. Other than that it's likely you won't have any visitors.
You walk around the building peaking into the many different rooms. There's two different wash rooms, a kitchen, a lounge room and multiple bedrooms. More than you need of course but you're not one to complain. Oyakata-sama was very kind to give you a place to call home so you'll accept it regardless of the size.
A knock at the front door grabs your attention forcing you to stop your exploration early. You make your way to the front, sliding open the door. To your surprise it's not another hashira outside of your door. Instead, it's Kuwajima.
"Kuwajima-sama? What are you doing here?" You question the old man as you let him into your new home.
"Kagaya sent me a letter telling me of your new home so I thought I would come visit you. It's been nearly two years since we've last seen each other after all." He looks around, taking in the sight of your empty home. You don't exactly have much to your name so the place is bare of the typical items you would find in someone's house.
"I have been rather busy since becoming a demon slayer." You slide the door shut behind him. "How have you been? I'm sorry I haven't written to you lately. I haven't had time now that I'm a hashira."
"I've been quite alright. I have started my search for another student but haven't yet found one. How is being a hashira? Are the others treating you fine?" He turns to face you, looking up at you since he's a bit shorter.
"It's been quite interesting so far." You pause, thinking through what all you should tell him. He's rather protective so you decide against telling him about some of the men flirting with you- mostly Tengen. "They are all rather nice to me. Shinobu, the insect hashira, took me into her home when I first became a hashira."
"You're actually making friends?" He's surprised, his eyes widening slightly. In all these years you've never once had a friend or reached out to anyone other than him.
"Not exactly." You sigh, crushing his hopes. "They're just acquaintances. Some of them just happen to be friendlier than others."
He frowns, disappointed. He always tried pushing you towards making friends and having relationships but you always rejected it, telling him that he's the only person you need in your life. Kuwajima is like a grandfather to you and he is the only person you have ever viewed as family. He is the only exception to your rule of not getting close to people.
"I really wish you would change your silly view on such things. Life may be short but it's worth filling it with people you love. They're what makes it worth living." Deep down you know that he's right but the idea of opening yourself up to that kind of pain is terrifying.
"If it will make you feel better about things then I promise to at least try to open up to others. However, I cannot promise that I will change my mind completely. If I even remotely feel as if it's pointless I'll stop."
"I suppose that's better than nothing." He mutters, giving up on arguing it any further. You're not the type of person to change your mind easily. "Anyways, I should probably get going now before it gets too late. Please try to write me every once in a while so I at least know you're okay."
"I'll try my best." You give him a soft smile as you watch him leave. Once he's out of sight you slide the door closed, letting out a deep sigh.
It was a short visit but enough to make you tired. The old man has a habit of draining your energy simply by making you think about your emotions and thoughts. Every single time you see him he tries to convince you to open your heart to others but it never works. Maybe this time you'll do it. He's getting to that point in life where he could die any day from old age and the last thing you want is to make him worry about you and your lonely tendencies. Though, you still aren't entirely open to having friends you will try your best for him.
