"Do I have to?" You question Shinobu as you stand outside of the Butterfly Mansion with her. She had sent a letter asking you to come over many hours ago, not giving any details. You came out of pure curiosity as well as the fact that it's been nearly two months since you've last seen any of the hashira. Everyone has been quite busy lately.
"I would appreciate it." She gives you a close-eyed smile as she hands you a piece of paper. On it is a list of items she needs from a nearby city. She's too busy to go herself, and the other girls are far too young to go off on their own. Huffing out of slight annoyance, you grumble to yourself before exiting the estate to make your way towards the city.
The sun beams brightly in the sky, making you squint your eyes to lessen the harshness of the glare. The intensity of the sun has always made you prefer darkness, even if it brings demons with it. Lifting your hand above your eyes, you look up to see exactly where the sun is positioned. It's about midway which means there's only a few hours until nightfall. It will more than likely be dark by the time you reach the city.
You return your gaze to the ground, lightly kicking at small stones as you walk. This is most certainly not how you expected to spend your day. When the insect hashira sent for you, the last thing you expected was to be forced to run errands for her. If anything, you expected for her to simply wish to talk with you or maybe even teach you more about medicine.
Scrunching your nose in annoyance, you kick a rock a bit too harshly, sending it skidding roughly across the ground. Your gaze follows after it and you pause upon spotting a familiar creature. "Kaburamaru?" You whisper the animals name, furrowing your brows as you approach it. The snake hisses quietly as you gently pick it up, it's tongue flickering out against your skin. "Where's Obanai?"
"Up here." The voice catches your attention as you move your gaze to look up at a tree. The hashira stares down at you as he lays back against the branch, looking rather bored. "Where are you going?"
"Shinobu needs me to do something for her." You answer honestly, returning your gaze to the snake in your hands. "What about you?"
He jumps down from the tree, landing next to you as he holds his arm out. The snake slithers from your hands, moving up his arm before settling on his shoulders. "I was returning home from a mission when I decided to rest. Would you like some company?"
"Are you sure?" You raise a brow, a little surprised at his offer. "I'm not sure how long it'll take and you did just return from a mission."
The man simply turns, nodding his head for you to follow him as he walks down the path you were previously walking along. You let out a quiet sigh as you follow after him. You're not quite sure if you're glad to have the company or not, especially since it's somebody you've rarely spoken with.
Unsurprisingly, the trip remains silent as neither of you speak up, simply keeping to your own thoughts as you walk side by side, occasionally bumping arms with each other. The silence isn't exactly awkward though it does make it feel as if time is slowly dragging by. You keep your eyes trained anywhere but on him in attempts to keep yourself occupied. The scenery is rather calming as the trees sway gently in the breeze.
You much prefer the calming countryside over the crowded cities. You've only ever been to the city a few times and each time you've disliked it. There's far too many people and it's quite noisy. Plus, during the night it's rather easy for demons to lurk about since the crowds are so large. The one thing you do like about the cities, however, is the colorful lights that decorate the buildings. You've always found them to be quite pretty.
As the sun sets, you can see the lights in the distance, making you quicken your steps slightly. You wish to gather the needed supplies before it fully gets dark so you can find a place to stay until morning. You left your swords at home not thinking you'd need them for a quick trip to Shinobu's home. Though, it's probably a good thing you didn't bring them since they would easily draw attention towards you which is not something you want.
