Timeline so far- Five months since becoming a Hashira.
~~~~~"You've improved quite a bit." You lean against a tree as you watch the younger boy pant heavily, his hands resting on his knees. "Last I saw you, you could barely do anything."
He turns to you, a little surprised by your sudden appearance. Standing up straight, he stares at you with wide eyes as he tries his best to remember you. After a few moments it dawns on him. "You're that girl from the day my sister turned."
"I am." You nod, pushing away from the tree to approach him. "The names (L/N) (Y/N). You are?"
"Tanjiro Kamado. My sisters name is Nezuko."
"How is she?"
Tanjiro sighs, suddenly looking rather sad. "She's been asleep for a few months now without waking up."
"At least she's still alive. I'm sure she's just regaining energy and she'll wake up soon. You just have to stay positive."
The boy nods before deciding to change the subject. "Can I ask why you're here (L/N)-San?"
"I was curious about how you and your sister were doing. It's not everyday somebody turns into a demon that doesn't attack people so my interest was piqued. I'm glad you're both doing well." You take notice of the wooden sword in his hand. "How is training coming along?"
"Not very well." Tanjiro frowns as he looks down at the sword he was repeatedly swinging before you arrived. "I'm improving a little bit but I'm not nearly good enough. It's hard getting the stances correct for the forms."
"I'm sure you'll perfect it soon enough. You just have to concentrate and continue to try until you get it right every time. If you want, I can try to help a bit. I planned on training myself as well."
"Are you sure? I wouldn't want to bother you."
"Of course." You give him a soft smile. "Why don't you start by showing me how you do one of the stances."
Tanjiro and you spend over an hour practicing stances, you correcting him and giving him tips every now and then. After that, you help him with swinging his wooden sword and then strength exercises. By the time you're both done, it's dark outside.
You both make your way back to Urukodaki's home in silence, enjoying the relaxing sounds of nature. Upon arriving, you're greeted by the ex-hashira who is standing outside waiting for you. You bow in greeting, him doing so in return.
"You've finally arrived. Have you been helping the boy?" Urukodaki questions, walking inside with you following after him.
"I have. He's doing quite well, so I'm sure he'll have it mastered within the year." You take a seat next to the burning fire, your eyes glancing over at Nezuko's sleeping form momentarily.
The two males sit down as well while Urukodaki prepares dinner. He scoops the meal into bowls before handing them over, the heat of it warming your hands. You take a deep breath, nearly salivating at how delicious the meal smells. Giving thanks, you gently blow on the soup before taking a bite.
Urokodaki breaks the peaceful silence after a few moments. "How has Giyu been? He hasn't written to me in a while."
You place your empty bowl to the side before answering. "He's doing well. I'll be sure to let him know how all of you are doing once I return home."
"Giyu? That's the slayer from the day Nezuko turned, right?" Tanjiro leans forward, his eyes gleaming with interest at the new topic of conversation. "I'm really thankful to him for sparing my sister and setting me on the path of becoming a demon slayer. I'm sure my life would be very different right now if it weren't for the two of you."
"If I'm being honest, I was quite surprised he let her live. I suppose you piqued his interest as much as you did mine. We both see something in you two- a chance at a better world. Nezuko is unique and I think that gives us hope that there's more demons out there like her, or that there's a chance for demons to become like her. I want to see the things you two do together in the future."
"Thank you for believing in us. Nezuko and I are going to work hard in order to bring peace to everyone. I don't want anyone else to ever go through what we did." He clenches his fist, looking down at it as he tries not to think of his deceased family. "Have you lost any family? You don't have to answer if you don't want to, I'm just curious."
"I have." You nod, turning to look out the open window. "Though, I don't remember anything about them. I lost both of my parents, and I'm not sure if I ever had any siblings or not. I know nothing about my true family."
"I'm sorry to hear that. I couldn't imagine not knowing my family or not knowing where I came from. It must be hard."
You shake your head, turning to give him a soft smile. "It's alright. I don't wish to have known them, so it's not a big deal to me. I have a family even if it's not by blood and that's all I need."
"I'm glad you still have people to care for." He smiles, glancing over at his sleeping sister. "Life is better when you have people you love. There's hardships at times, but the good outweighs the bad quite a bit."
"Alright you two, it's time for bed. You still have training bright and early in the morning so get your rest while you can." Urukodaki sets out an extra futon for you which you thank him for.
You all lay down, the others drifting off rather quickly while you remain awake, staring up at the ceiling while lost in thought. For such a young boy, Tanjiro seems wise and smart. Thinking about it, you know his words are true. Love outweighs everything else. Your love for Kuwajima brings you happiness and comfort. It's nice knowing that you have someone there for you and that they love you just as you love them.
Perhaps the pain of losing someone isn't as bad as you think it is. Perhaps the time spent with them and the memories made ease the pain. People dying is unavoidable, but loving them is a choice.
Perhaps you've been making the wrong choice all along.
