"Magic lives in the very fabric of nature. And here in our circle of stone, it's magnified. The vessel, tests your ability to challenge that magic." Dowling tells the group of first year fairies as they all sit in the stone circle, surrounding the fire in the middle. "There are many different elements."
She looks around at all of them, her eyes lingering on Alex for a few extra seconds before she continues to pace around, looking at all of the students, "earth. Soil, sand, rock, and all manner of plant life." The earth fairies all stand up first and get into a line, taking turns showing off their abilities.
Alex stays seated as she watched them, all of them having relatively good control over their abilities, and that was something she envied. She couldn't even use her powers beside feeling other peoples emotions for more than a second without all of her other abilities fighting to be used too.
"Water. The lakes and the oceans of the world, or the molecules that exist in all of the organisms around us." Next the water fairies took turns in showing off their abilities, all of them successfully doing so.
"The mind. Thoughts, memories, dreams."
"Air. Speed, temperature, sound.... its power and electrical properties"
"Whatever your element is, the emotions underlining it are the same for all fairies," Dowling then nods her head over at Bloom who hesitates before standing up and making her way over to the bowl. She stared at it for a few moments before placing her hands on the handles and attempting to channel her emotions into the bowl to spark a reaction"Open yourself up to the magic world around you," Dowling explained and Bloom began to concentrate as much as she could, small sparks began to form in the bowl. "Push past your doubts." Bloom continued to try, causing a few splitters of flames in the bowl.
Musa and Alex shared a look, they could feel all the emotions rushing out of everyone, especially Bloom and it was beginning to become unbearable for the two girls as they sat there, unable to just plug their headphones in like they usually did and block it all out.
The students around all began to whisper amongst themselves, many of them were growing impatient with Bloom while others found the situation amusing. As the time that she stood there continued to grow and grow.
"Focus on clear, positive feelings." Dowling continued, attempting to help bloom as much as she could as the fairy began to loose focus due to all of the people around her whispering
"Why is it taking so long?" A girl whispered and a few people agreed
"Thats the same thing your mum asks your dad in the middle of the night so shut your mouth," Alex snapped, growing annoyed at all of the whispering. People turned to look at her with their mouths dropped, there was a scattered sound of snickers around them
"How about your parents? Focus on how much you love them?" Aisha suddenly speaks up, causing Bloom to look over at her three friends for a few moments before turning back to look at the bowl she was grasping tightly in her hands
"It's not working," Bloom spits out, growing embarrassed and tired as she tilted her head up to look across at Dowling.
Dowling continued to stare at Bloom, "Stop thinking. Magic comes from--"
"Emotions. Ive been listening I know what I'm supposed to do," Bloom spat out at the teacher which automatically seemed to catch Alex's attention. Alex raised her eyebrows at the girl, not knowing why but she felt a sudden annoyance towards the girl
"This is a disaster..." Musa whispered to Alex and Aisha, both of whom nodded their heads
"It's not happening, could you please move on?" Bloom snapped, glaring over at Dowling. Dowling just stared at her not saying anything as Bloom stormed back over to her spot on the rock next to Aisha
"Hey Bloom, its alright to crack the shits, but I'm sure you'll get it eventually alright," Alex said, trying to give the girl a comforting smile but Bloom just sneered over at her
"Well what about you? You haven't done anything but sit on the rock and watch," Bloom said and it was clear that Alex wasn't a fan of her tone as her lip turned up
Alex stood up, attracting the attention of Dowling who smiled a bit over at the girl who had chosen to sit down, not wanting to lose control or hurt anyone. "Alexandra, please feel welcome to step forward."
She knew that what she was about to do was extremely petty, but Bloom had gotten on her nerves with how she had been acting. So Alex walked up to the bowl and placed her hands on the handle before closing her eyes momentarily, focusing on one bit of magic while trying to keep the others under control and in a matter of seconds a large flame stood proudly in the bowl.
Bloom watched it with her eyes wide and her mouth dropped while Alex quickly extinguished it, feeling guilty as soon as she had done it but then suddenly water droplets began to rise out of the ground all around them.
Alex quickly tore her hands from the bowl and put them down by her side, while the next thing to spew from the ground were a bunch of flowers. Everyone watched and stared in amazement. She closes her eyes and tries to find something that would calm her down, and her mind suddenly wandered to the boy that she had met the day before and she tried to focus on the feeling of his hand brushing against her forehead as he tucked the flower behind her ear.
The flowers remained but the droplets all floated back down into the ground and she kept a clear mind and calmed down. The people around her were quick to burst out into chatter once more as the girl made her way back down to the seat between Musa and Aisha.
"That was bloody brilliant, I fricking knew I wasn't imagining it. I knew you had more than one elemental ability, why didn't you tell us?" Aisha said with a wide grin on her face, excitement radiating out of her as she clutched onto the short girls arms
"I uh - I," Alex stuttered out, trying to think of what the best thing to say would be, "I guess I was just waiting for the right time I guess" she muttered out softly as she
