So you know southern cross stuff? Yeah so;
Phoenix is one of the southern birds (Including Grus (Crane), Pavo (Peacock), and Tucana (Toucan)). So right off the bat; Phoenix's association with the southern cross is pretty evident and makes sense.
Then we get to Acrux, or Hosshi. The most obvious thing is the fact Hosshi (or rather, just Hoshi) translates to "Star" in Japanese. It also appears that Acrux is the brightest star in the southern cross... but its described with a blue hue rather than green.
The brightest star in the Phoenix constellation is apparently Ankaa (PLEASE DONT SAY HER NAME NO NO GOD PLEASE), which is Arabic for "the Phoenix". If Google is correct; Arabic is the language of Egypt, and I believe Phoenix first landed in Egypt (at least in the manga).
