"welcome to the pretentious fuckers paradise." anya spoke causing deena to stifle a laugh as they rolled past the sign. the houses on this side were fantastic, big and clean. houses of rich people. that were fenced. to keep them out, maybe? the air coming from the tiny window was so pure and clean, it almost made them sick. how can a town as beautiful as sunnyvale be beside a shithole like shadyside. the sun setting in the background making it look almost beautiful. like the place was angelic, it wasn't.
"you know, i wanted to live here when i was younger." deena told anastasia as they looked out into the streets of houses, no mansions. she only gave her a sad smile and patted her shoulder.
"my mum was offered to live here for her job, but she decided to move to shadyside instead. it was closer to the station apparently. lot of bullshit." anya told her as she looked out into the streets full of beautiful homes. sometimes when she's sitting in her room she wished her mum had chose to live in sunnyvale, but then she wouldn't had met deena, kate and simon and now she wouldn't have it any other way. soon the sunnyvale high-school came into view. shadyside students pilling out of the carpark beside the field. watching the players in red turning up their noses at sight of them.
"here comes the shit squad."
"can smell them from here."
"their city must give them asthma? look at the kids coughing"
"they all look so dead."
"properly are."
"shittysiders strike again."
"wonders who's gonna go mad this time."
"purely disgusting"
"hold on, who's that?"
"she's hot."
chatter ran through the group of sunnvale kids. as the shadyside students slowly walk onto the field. anastasia feeling incredibly sick under their gaze.
"anastasia. can we talk?" simon shouted, breaking through the crowd of players to the girl who walked beside deena. anya didn't dare answer him, she couldn't explain why. she just didn't.
"i didn't make you mad, did i?" he asked in the softest voice ever, that made her want to turn on her heel and kiss him till he realised she was just being an idiot. but she didn't. the tone of his voice hurt her, he thought he did something wrong. he didn't even know what was wrong, and neither did she. slowly the shadysiders begun to line up beside the sunnyvale kids, a clear divide between the two. as teams, as towns. anastasia feeling herself getting dragged between deena and kate. as simon was forced to the front, afterall he was there mascot. the shadyside witch.
"this isn't how i wanted to be here tonight, i wanted to be here as a fan. our sunnyvale devil's and your shadyside witches going down in some good old football. instead, i find myself here as a husband, as a father, as a neighbour. amd thus, the mayor of sunnyvale. and behalf of all the people in our town. i say all of sunnyvale mourns with you." the person on the stage, sorry the mayor, spoke as amya was wedged between the two girls.
"what a load of bullshit." anastasia spat as she felt irrated by the mayor's words. they didn't care. they never did. and never will.
"yeah, looks like they give a damn. the only sunnyvalers who came, where those who had too. football team, and the cheerleaders." kate spoke as she looked at the rest of the crowd, the other half. and she was right. of course. anya noticing deena's distance look. following her eyes too. sam. in the arms of someone else. rage spiked through anya, she felt like she wanted to kill sam. this whole time poor deena had been trying to get over her and there she was in some douchbag's arms. even though deena broke up with sam, something that anastasia didn't actually know.
"our hearts broken world grief." he finished as deena watched sam's ass be grabbed by the boy holding her, and that caused something to snap in deena. and with that she was walking away. pulling away from the grip anya had on her hand.
"deena, where are you going!" anastasia shouted, trying to go after deena when kate's hand stopped her.
"she'll be okay." kate whispered to her. drawing their attention back to the mayor speaking, but anya wasn't listening. instead watching sam break from the player arm's. her too disappearing into the crowd of people. simon who was at the front looking back at his friends, the bored look on both their faces. and then he decided he wanted to stand them, fuck being the mascot. simon making his way to the crowd as the lights begun to flicker off. the candles slowly being lit. pc. goode stood at the front talking as he looked unto the crowd. staring at someone. her. his gaze locked on her. she felt uncomfortable. he had been in her dream. she had so many questions. how had she seen it? why was he there when he was a sunnyvale cop? why was he everywhere?
"there's no peace left behind in the past" he spoke, not taking his gaze off her. anya shifting her weight to the other leg. side glancing to the boys beside her. a sunnyvale boy. player 14. t. paterson. who was already smirking at her. making her uneasy yet she gave him a small smile as she looked back towards the front.
"let's look to the light." goode spoke again, still going on with his speech full of pure bullshit yet she still wasn't listening. something was wrong, she could feel it. wondering of it was to do with deena and sam.
"yeah. what we should do is light a fuse and burn down shittyside." the boy that that touching sam spoke, mocking the way goode was speaking. the boy infront of anya turning to look at him. scoffing at this words. nicholson looked furious at what petter had said.
"what did you say?" he asked, looking angry at his words. the sunnyvaler turning to look at the blue side, eyes lingering on her. before looking back to the boy.
