"Thank you, sheriff, once again for taking me to town. I really appreciate it," Mix said as he entered the car and put on his seatbelt.
"No problem, Mix. I already told you you can ask me for anything," sheriff LeBlanc smiled as he started his car and pulled away from the Ghost Cabin.
Mix smiled with a wicked smile, trying to hide it from the sheriff, "ehmm, sheriff, actually, I have news about something you have been very interested in."
"Oh, what is it?" Sheriff asked, Mix could hear the curiosity in that question.
"About the ghost. You were right, there is a ghost in the Ghost Cabin." Mix tried to sound as frightened as possible. A few weeks ago Mix remembered to finally ask Earth if he would be comfortable with Mix telling sheriff LeBlanc about him. And, oh boy, did it go better than Mix could even imagine.
.....
"My lovely Earth, can I ask you something?" Mix broke the silence as he turned the last page of Dracula and put the book away.
"Your lovely?" Earth narrowed his eyes, sitting right next to Mix on the sofa, getting rid of any unnecessary space between them. He put his arm on top of the sofa, his fingers were lightly dancing on Mix's shoulder. "What it is you want, my angel?"
"Nothing much, actually. Just, I don't know if you are aware but sheriff LeBlanc is like obsessed with you," Mix said jokingly.
"Really? I didn't know about that, tell me more."
"He asked me on multiple occasions if I have met the ghost of the Ghost Cabin. If you are real? If I think you are really here and so on."
"And what did you tell him?" Earth asked, looking way more interested in his fingers on Mix's shoulder than in sheriff LeBlanc being 'obsessed' with him.
"I told him I haven't come across any ghost, yet. I didn't want to tell him anything without knowing you'll be okay with it. Honestly, that's what I wanted to ask." Mix said, taking Earth's hand from his shoulder and intertwining their fingers. Earth's hand was too distracting. It's not like them holding hands wasn't distracting too, but not as much...well, maybe.
"Tell him," Earth shrugged, "I don't care. He can't see me anyway. And he is already scared of me without knowing that I'm really here."
Mix frowned, "I'm serious."
"Me too. I'm fine if you tell him." There was a playful spark in Earth's eyes, "but maybe we should use the opportunity that life is giving us."
"What does that supposed to mean?"
"Sheriff is already scared of me, as we know. So, why don't we feed his imagination a little?"
Mix's attention sparked up, "what do you want to do?"
"It's simple. Next time when you will have the opportunity tell him you saw me, and make up some really crazy, scary stuff about me."
"Poor sheriff, he is not even going to want to bring me groceries anymore if I scare him like that," Mix tried really hard to not laugh at a picture that formed in his imagination.
"Don't worry, he will. He will do it the same way as he is doing it now. Just tell him I can't go outside," Earth smiled, very proud of his tricky plan. "Take it as a belated Halloween."
Mix realized something, "I didn't even have a Halloween party with you."
"We are having a Halloween party every day, Mix. I'm a ghost, aren't I?" Earth winked.
.....
Sheriff LeBlanc almost gasped, his eyes wide open as he slowed down the car a little bit and gave Mix half of his attention. The second half, still carefully on the road. "How was it? Was it him or her? Are they scary? I always knew there was a ghost! I knew it!"
Oh God, this is gonna be an Olympic level of hard to not start laughing. Mix cleared his throat, put on his best neutral but high-key scared face and started, "Oh, I did. I definitely did. It's him and he looks like a serial killer. If looks could kill I'm already...you know. And I..." Mix lightly shook his body, closing his eyes for a moment before opening them again, "I have shivers talking about it. I think that guy really wants to kill me. But he is a ghost so like, I mean I don't know if he can do it, you know?"
Mix saw sheriff LeBlanc visibly gulping and biting his lower lip. Who would have thought that the sheriff will be so scared of ghosts? Hey sheriff, what if Mix will need your help with that scary scary boo boo the ghost? You can't be scared. You need to protect him!
"Me neither sheriff, me neither. And it's even worse!"
"Worse?"
"Yeah, I can't sleep at night. That ghost just keeps howling and whispering in my ear really scary stuff. You don't even want to know. It's so terrible I had nightmares multiple times already. The only good thing is that he can't touch me...or at least he didn't yet."
"Yes, that's good...he didn't yet," Sheriff Leblanc repeated absentmindedly. "But, will you be alright there, with — with the ghost?"
"Yeah, I'll manage. It is pretty scary but who knows, maybe if that ghost is there then my grandmother might also come to see me."
"Uhmmm, you are right she might," the sheriff said as they were already entering the small town, roughly fifteen kilometres away from the Ghost Cabin — from Earth."About that ghost, he can't go outside, right?"
"No, don't worry. I tested it. He can't go out of the cabin."
"How did you test it?"
"I might have pissed him off a bit and when I was running from him I ran out and he didn't chase me there," Mix replied, masking his laugh with a cough.
"You did what?" Sheriff's voice got an octave higher, surprised by Mix's Oscar-worthy story.
"It wasn't on purpose. I accidentally walk right through him, and I guess he didn't like that."
"Oh my, well I guess at least it's good he can't go outside," the sheriff said, trying his best not to sound scared but fear was plastered all over his face.
It worked! Mix did a happy dance in his head. He couldn't wait to tell this to Earth.
"So we are here. Where should I stop?"
"Hmmm, next to the post office would be great," Mix said, taking out his phone and turning on his data to see how much he missed.
Turned out A LOT.
He got tons of text messages, phone calls, and even emails all from his family and some from Khaoutung too. But what caught his attention the most were text messages from his sister.
Mix?
Mix?
Mix, pick up the phone or at least read the text messages!
Okay, I know you went to the middle of nowhere but helloooo
Fine, I'm gonna send you a letter but just so you know it's about my wedding.
