Jill emerged onto the back wrap-around porch, looking around warily at the dark outside. The clouded moonlight shone onto the old concrete pillars placed along the porch railing. Jill's eyes glazed over the vines pouring over the outside walls and abandoned metal chairs next to a bench at the end. The sight was hauntingly beautiful.Jill dug her hand into her pants pocket and pulled out the dog whistle, holding it lightly in her gloved hand. She sighed deeply before lifting it up slowly to her lips. She hesitated for a moment before blowing into it.
As she blew into the gold whistle, she squinted her eyes, but opened them slowly after the only thing she could hear was her exhale.
She paused in place as she held the dog whistle. Nothing.
Maybe it doesn't work...?
Jill began to pocket the dog whistle before whipping her head up at the sound of trees rustling outside the porch. She almost blew it off as the wind, but her shoulders tensed when she saw the reflection of black eyes staring at her just past the brush.
Jill gasped as the abrupt silence was interrupted by harsh barking and a bloody dog leaping above the concrete railing around the mansion porch. The dog immediately bolted for Jill, causing her to grip the shotgun tightly.
"Come on..." Jill hissed before lifting up the shotgun and pulling the trigger as the dog bounded toward her. Jill stumbled back a few paces as she fired the shotgun, and knelt to the ground to balance herself. The dog in front of her let out a growl before dropping its head with the rest of its body, and laid dead with dark blood seeping out from under it. Jill glanced down at the shotgun in disbelief.
Some gun, huh?
Jill let the shotgun fall around her waist and she stood back up, exhaling deeply as she took a few steps toward the dog. She stopped before it, looking around at the dark trees beyond her. "Chris...?" she called out.
After a few more moments, Jill hung her head. Nothing.
As Jill looked down at the ground, she blinked her eyes slowly before furrowing her brow. Around the rotting neck of the dog was a dirty collar, with an unusually bright tag. Jill knelt down and clutched the dog tag before ripping the collar from the its neck. She held it loosely in her hand, examining the tag.
The front was embedded with the silhoutte of a knight's armor, and the outside was lined with a bright metal. Jill pulled the tag from the collar and let the leather drop to the ground. She flipped the tag around to reveal a small black button. She tilted her head in confusion before reaching her other hand up to push it.
More barking whipped her head up and she took a few quick steps back as another dog emerged from the bushes and leapt over the railing. It growled and paced forward, stopping to look at its dead comrade on the pavement. The dog let out one last ferocious bark before leaping on top of Jill and forcing her back to hit the ground.
