Chris stepped back into the dark hallway covered with cobwebs. He looked down at the bronze key in his hand, then back up to the wooden door up the short, broken staircase. He made his way down the hallway and stopped before the staircase. He paused and looked down the branch of the hallway, where the zombie he had killed earlier was laying. Chris tilted his head, turning from the staircase to approach the zombie.
He knelt down, and upon closer look, noticed its maroon skin, definitely not the same pale, dead color as before. Chris gulped and looked at its hands which were sprawled out beside it on the floor.
Where rotten fingers once were, were now white claws.
Chris gulped nervously again and slowly stood back up. "What the hell...?"
His eyes widened as the zombie's clawed fingers twitched, and it convulsed lightly on the ground. Chris continued to step back, watching with surprise as the zombie growled aggressively and quickly launched up to its feet.
It spun around, its face the color of blood, and its body twitching in agitation. It let out a loud groan before quickly shuffling to Chris.
"Oh shit-" Chris cursed and pulled out his pistol. He quickly fired it, sending the zombie stumbling back.
Chris' heart soon lurched when he saw the zombie recover from the stumble, looking unphased and angrier.
Chris fell back as the red zombie lunged for him, pinning him down to the ground as it tried to scratch at him.
"-Fuck off me!" Chris yelled and kicked up at the zombie, who lashed its teeth and tried to claw at his face.
Chris reached for his pistol next to him, and struggled to pull it up and fired a bullet into the temple of the red zombie. It fell back, but immediately tried to jump back on him again.
Chris sat up and pulled the trigger two more times, finally putting the zombie down, its now third, life ending. It laid face down, its eyes wide and jaw offset, and blood seeping into the floorboards as red as its skin was.
Chris was still gasping for air as he backed up into the creaky wall. He watched the zombie with shock before rubbing his eyes and slowly standing up, still watching it.
"Okay... so they don't die the first time. Awesome." Chris scoffed and rolled his eyes.
"Really awesome."
Chris pushed open the wooden door after finally going up the small staircase and aimed his pistol up, looking around warily as he entered the room.
It was the darkest room yet, and was again, covered with cobwebs. It looked like an old wine cellar with creaky floorboards and aged wood on the walls. There was a huge hole in the ceiling that led up to God-knows-where.
