Chapter 9; an eventful event
"Good evening, miss Thorn," the man at the front addressed me politely. I smiled at him, taking the hand he was offering to help me up the stairs and into the big room.
It was finally the day of the ball and I was so excited. I had chosen the most beautiful dress I own. Its colour was a deep blue, it was long sleeved and looked boring on the front for some. But when I turned around, the skin of my back was showing through a cut. It made the whole piece more enthralling.
"Wow," Laura hushed when she saw me stepping into the big room where the event was held. "You look amazing!" She gave me a small hug.
"Thank you," I smiled, "but so do you."
She was wearing a red, knee-long and strapless dress that fitted her perfectly. A mask adorned her face just like mine, her brown eyes looking darker than they usually did.
"Thank you," she smiled, letting her eyes wander around the room. To me it seemed as if she was searching for something.
"Looking for someone?" I teased, seeing her cheeks go red.
"Just Logan. He is my date for tonight," she smiled and I let out a little laugh. This wasn't the type of ball to bring a date to. But since Logan was invited anyways, she could call him her date or whatever she wanted.
"Alright then. I am going to find Lucas. I'll catch you later!" I waved her off and made my way to the large table in the middle of the great room. There were seats for at least eighty people and only half of them were occupied.
Lucas was sitting right in the middle with Sara by his side, drinking his wine while laughing at something one of the men had said. I was happy that they all had a great time, knowing that it would only last for some hours before everything had to get back to normal tomorrow morning.
"Hey Lucas, hey Sara," I smiled when I walked up to them from behind, placing my arms on their shoulders and leaning forwards to catch a look at their faces, hidden behind a mask.
"So many people are here," I gushed, seeing them both smile and nod.
"Yeah. There are a lot of people here from district two. I didn't expect so many," Lucas said, taking another sip of his wine. He then turned back to his man, engulfing in a new conversation immediately. I took this as my cue to leave him alone and let him enjoy his night without his little sister annoying him.
Three hours and too many glasses of wine later, I was starting to feel really good, but really tired. I had met some new people from district two during the night. I was just talking to Nate, a boy around my age from district two, when a gun shot rang through the room.
Suddenly, everyone was silent for a moment. The guests looked around frantically to make out the direction from where the gun shot was fired, but there was nothing or no one to be seen.
"If this isn't the nicest event I have ever seen. I must say I am quite sad that I wasn't invited," A man stepped in the middle of the room, a gun tightly held in his right hand.
And I knew that man.
It was Clyde, the ex-leader of district one that I had met at Justin's club the other night. I felt a shudder run down my spine and I tried to figure out reasons why he was here.
As an immediate reaction, around ten men from the table my brother was sitting at stood up with a gun in their hand, pointing it into the direction of Clyde. He didn't seem fazed by it, though. He only laughed and shook his head.
