Gon was standing in a line with a few other people, it was the day of the recommendation exams. Next to him was a guy with red and white hair with the number 23, and a guy with a skeleton like face who was number 16. He noticed how he was not only the shortest one there, but definitely the only one wearing casual clothes. They all had numbers, his was 45. they had just taken the written exams, Gon was pretty sure he either failed or just barely passed. I'm so pumped for this race though! He couldn't help bouncing up and down on his feet a little, which got him odd looks. Everybody looked either nervous or cocky, except for this one other guy that had a perpetual smile. His number was 41, and he was on the other side of 16. "Alright, you'll be split up into teams of four for the 3 Kilometer run!" the really loud guy said. His hair kind of reminded him of a bird, and he seemed just as excited as he was. "now, everybody say PLUS ULTRA!" Gon and number 41 were the only ones who answered. "PLUS ULTRA!" he grinned, and pointed at them both "I like your energy! Now let's get started!"

He, 23, 41, and a guy who looked like blue coral with the number 31 were placed together. "Ready!" everybody except him got into running positions. "set!" Gon enforced his feet with Nen. "Go!" the others took off, but Gon waited for thirty seconds. "what are you doing? Get going!" the person at the starting point said in confusion. Gon gave him a smile and a thumbs up, "no worries, I'm gonna come in first!" then he bolted. He ran for about fifteen seconds before passing number 31. Numbers 23 and 41 were further ahead and he passed both of them in a flash eight seconds later. They were both focused on each other and didn't notice him, so Gon kept running as fast as he could until he got within sight of the goal. At that point he turned and looked backwards to see that the others were tiny dots behind him. Are they really that slow? Or am I just super fast? Maybe he shouldn't have used Nen. Either way, he turned and started to skip at a slower pace towards the end goal. "Holy crap! Your already here?" the bird hair guy announced in a loud voice. Gon waved, "Hi!" he jogged over and stopped just short of the finish line, then turned to look back. "I don't think their slow, I just think I'm really fast" he said, then stepped over the line. He grinned, "six minutes better than the average first year! Congratulations!" he beamed, then ran over and gave him a hug. "Woah there little listener!" he giggled then bounced back, waiting for the others to come. "sorry, I'm just really excited! I wonder who's gonna win?"

Number 41 passed the line just before 23 did, it was so close! "by a hair! Number 41 finishes first!" he raised his arms in the air and pumped them up and down. "alright! I won!" Gon giggled, attracting the attention of both other competitors. "you were second!" both of their eyes widened. "but I didn't see you pass us" 41 said. He beamed, "you guys were way too focused on each other, but you both did awesome!" number 23 looked away. "I just have to pass this test" he said quietly, but Gon could hear the subtle anger in his voice. "I wasn't competing against you guys or anything" he sounds so cold. But then he thought of Killua, who was equally cold. Don't judge people by first impressions! I'm sure he's awesome! "anyways, my name's Gon!" he said, holding a hand out. Number 23 didn't respond, he just walked away. But 41 grabbed his hand with a wide smile. "Inasa! Nice to meet you!" he smiled back as they shook hands, "alright! Time for interviews!"

Gon was sitting across from a small furry creature on a stool who was sipping tea. "Woah, what even are you?" he asked curiously. The creature smiled, "I am Principal Nezu, the principal of U.A high school." Gon blinked. That didn't really answer my question. "It has come to my attention that while you failed the written portion of the exams, you did outstandingly on the practical exams" Gon rubbed the back of his head. "well, I'm gonna be honest. I'm not very smart when it comes to numbers or science" then he smiled eagerly. "but I promise you I'm really strong! And one of my friends says that I have good battle smarts!" he nodded. "usually I would have just said you had failed and sent you on your way, but you have proven to be exceptional so I'll add you into the hero course" Gon beamed. "really? I've never been to school before! I'm really excited-" Principal Nezu spoke right over his excited chattering. "under one condition" Gon paused, then toned himself down a little as he took another sip of tea. One condition, shouldn't be too hard right? Principal Nezu gave him a bright smile eager smile, "you have to answer a series of questions that are not part of the traditional interview for me." Gon thought for a moment, then shrugged. "sure" Principal Nezu set down his cup on the table before asking his first question. "based on my calculations, I have reason to believe you had previous training. Is this true?" Gon smiled, "Oh yeah, I did!" Principal Nezu nodded. "when did you start?" Gon thought for a moment. It was after my first hunter's exam but before Killua's second. That means I was 12. well, I was really close to 13. He decided to go with the former, Gon didn't actually know which one was correct and he was pretty sure the testing gate training counted "12"
