Chapter 4

"I'm Four. And you are?" He asks.

"I, um. I'm Tris." I reply back.

"Nice to meet you, Tris." He winks at me and I turn towards the teacher so he can't see me blush.

While we were doing our partner lab, I occasionally would see Four's eyes catch mine and then quickly flicker away.

After class, I gather my things and had to my locker. From twenty feet away, Christina comes barreling at me until she almost knocks me over when she couldn't stop.

"So. How was it with Four?" She asks cooingly. "Any, chemistry, between you two?"

"We were just lab partners," I reply back rather annoyed.

"Yeah, sure." She says. Chemistry lab partners."

"No it's not like that," I reply annoyed and turn to enter my combination into my locker.

"You like him, I know it."

"No I don't! Just because we were paired up for a stupid project doesn't mean that I'm in love with him!" I yell back.

"Say what you want, I know it's true."

"No it isn't. I barely even talked to him."

"Well you better change that right now because speaking of the devil-"

"Hey, Tris."

I turn to see who it is and I hit my head against the locker door.

"Oww," I groan as I clutch the top if my head. As I press down, I feel the small pool of blood forming from the injury.

"Well I'd better leave you two alone," Christina smirks and strides away. "See you later, Tris."

"Are you okay?" Four asks as I remain in the same position. "Do you want me to take you to the nurse's office?"

I am about to reject so that I don't look like a coward, but as the blood on my hand gradually spreads, I nod my head. He gently takes my elbow, leading me to the nurse'a office, and sends electrifying sparks up my arm.

When we reach the office, the nurse instructs me to sit down and hold an ice pack on my head. I can tell the nurse doesn't care by the harshness in her tone.

"I would stay here with you, but I have to get back to class, I can't risk being tardy again." He says as the bell rings. "See you later."

He walks out of the office and I am left alone holding the ice pack to my head.

••••

An hour later, I return back my normal classes until the end of the day. I don't bother waiting for Christina as I jump in my car and drive home.

As I enter the house, I can sense no signs of movement, which is usually not normal.

After school, Caleb usually always beats me home so that he could get ready and leave for tutoring the other students. Now the house stands with no signs of activity. With Caleb gone I feel quite lonely at some times. We never have deep conversations, but yet for some reason, having someone else's presence calmed out nerves, even if that person wasn't even in the room.

The buzz of my phone cuts off my thoughts.

"Hello?" I ask.

No answer.

"Who is this?"

Still no answer. I end the call.

"That was weird," I say to myself. I pull of my book bag and sling it over the back of the kitchen chair. Not to brag, but I've always been pretty smart so my good grades come quite easily.

After I finish my homework, I make myself soup and plop down on the couch to watch some tv.

But not long after do I abandon my soup and drift off into a dream filled sleep.
