It was the week after Grandma's funeral and I was in Mom hospital room waiting for her to wake up. Everything seemed to go faster and was duller than it used to be. School was not interesting, my friends and teachers were avoiding me not knowing how they should respond on the situation and left me alone. Not bothering to know how I am.
I had spoken with Dad several times and he was going to arrive later today but was already planning to leave the day afterward saying that he could not leave his business to inexperienced employees.
I still had difficulties to understand the changes in Dad; he used to be a loving husband and a caring father when he used to work at grandpa's law firm.
It all started with grandpa's will, when it became clear that grandpa had given his law firms managing rights to one of his Lawyers instead of Dad, from that moment on Dad started to lose something and resigned short afterwards. He must have hoped that grandpa would leave the law firm to him as his daughter's husband but we all knew that grandpa wouldn't be able to be so greedy.
He had received the Law firm from Mr. Peters who was an orphan like grandpa and he again left it to an orphan like him which was stated in Mr. Peters will so he had to keep his promise.
While I was daydreaming Dr. Powell came in to the room. "Laura, could you please go out for a moment, the nurse is going to wake your mother and I need to speak with her in private."
He was probably going to try to change Mom's mind regarding the treatment she rejected so I didn't complain about the way he was treating me like I would have done if Mom was not sick.

"Reanne, I have spoken with your husband and he wanted to know the condition you are in. He wanted to know if you were in a right state of mind to have your statement to be legally accepted. "
"I don't know why your husband wanted to know it but I thought that you should know". After a moment of silence
"He wants to divorce me, knowing him he won't use my condition as a reason to get it done faster. I love him, I gave him everything I had but now he wants to divorce me " small tears flowed from her cheeks.
Might this be the reason why she rejected the treatment, to keep her husband from divorcing her? Knowing I have no right to judge her I didn't comment on it.
"Ms. Griffins Hylle, you might be having difficulties in your personal life but please consider your daughter first. If we don't start with the treatments she might lose her mother as well." With his remark he left her alone.

When I was on my way back to Mom's room I started to hear loud arguing voices coming from one of the rooms.
When I came closer to her room I realized that the arguing voices were coming from Mom's room.
"Reanne, I am not going to continue with this argument. I want the divorce and Hannah is coming back with me to England!" screamed a man whose voice was similar to my Dads.
"Is it because I am sick? I'll get better, I promise you. Please Matthew, why are you doing this to me? You know I love you."
Not knowing what to do, I was standing there outside the room and saw Dr. Powell walking to my direction. He smiled at me and went in to the room.
"Mr. and Ms. Griffins Hylle I want you to remind you that you are in a hospital and you have no right to disturb other patients. If you have something to discuss please do it on a more civilized manner."
"I don't know if you noticed but your daughter is standing outside the room" and he pointing at me.
"Reanne if you don't want this to be done in the hard way sign the papers I gave you". And continued, "Hannah, I am going to your grandparent's house, say goodbye to your mother and meet me in 10 minutes in the parking lot." and Dad walked out the room.
"Mom, what's going on? Are you and Dad going to divorce?" I asked her.
"It's okay Hannah, you don't have to worry. Go with your dad and do what he asks you. I will see you tomorrow, Good bye dear" and kissed me on my forehead.
"Goodbye Mom" and I left her alone with Dr. Powell.
"Doctor, will he be able to take Hannah from me? she asked me with almost no sound to her voice.
"If I have to be honest Ms. Griffins Hylle, due to your current condition the judge will considers Hannah's best interest and will provide your husband with her custody, even if she is old enough to choose with whom she want to stay. Your illness and your rejecting the medication would be definitely used against you by your husband's lawyer."
"So at the moment I have no chance on winning over my husband?"
"That is how the current picture is, but if you were to accept the treatment and if you were to fight your illness you can get her back from your husband".
"So if I get well first I can get Hannah back? How long will it take before you can remove that tumor in my brain?"
"Before we can talk about a surgery we have to start with your medication and even though if I want to give you a time frame it all depends on you and your willingness to recover".
"I understand it doctor, I will take the medication. Could you please give me a pencil I have to sign this papers". Something in her eyes changed, gone was the dullness and hopelessness, determination had taken their place. Determination to overcome her illness, determination that was fueled by her motherly instinct to get her daughter back. Ms. Griffins -Hylle was going to fight for her loved ones.

The next day I came back to say goodbye to my Mom. Dad told me about their decision to get divorced and he was going to have the custody over me. He also told me that even if I wanted to stay with Mom, due to her illness I wouldn't be able to which left no room to escape.
I will have to leave everything behind, my Mom, grandma and my so called friends. I will have to leave this place I called home.
"Hannah, please forgive me. As soon as I get well again, I'll get you back. We will live together like we used to. Only you and me, but before that time comes, promise me that you will stay healthy and show your Dad that you are my daughter and your grandma's grandchild. You might be a griffins but that is not because of your father but because of your heritage from your grandma. "
"Here take this box; it's your grandma's birthday present'. She gave me a beautiful wooden box with a shield and two lions to each side. I wanted to open it but it was locked. I looked at Mom;
"I don't know dear, she never gave me the key. I don't know what your grandma's intention was but she wanted to give you this box. I remember it from my childhood; she would always make sure that it was protected well. Never ones did she allow me to have a look at it so I am a bit surprised that she gave it to you."
"Then I have to treasure it as well" knowing it will be last gift I will receive from grandma.
Taking her necklace off which she had received from grandpa when she was my age, she placed in my hand.
"I hope you grow up to be a nice young lady, who is proud for what she is."
Dad looking irritated at his watch referring to that it was time to leave. "Goodbye my dear Daughter, stay well until I get you".
"Goodbye Mom, please get well soon" and she let me go from her embrace. I took my luggage and smiled sadly at Mom and left with dad to get on the first airplane to London.
(The second part of the story is about to start, what did you think? Is it good? Bad :'(...perhaps promising???) I am dying to know what you think....
