“Mom, Mom what’s wrong with you, Mom…MOM!” She doesn’t wake up, why is she not waking up?” Hannah Calm down, you are in a hospital, calm down. You know what you have to do; you have learned it in home economics class. Think Hannah, think! Before I call the nurse I have to place Mom on her back, make sure she is breathing and get the nurse. You can do it Hannah. Grandma is gone you don’t want to lose Mom as well, do you?
After having ensured that Mom is lying in the right position I went out to find a nurse. After having informed a nurse, Grandma’s doctor and a pregnant nurse came in to the room.
On the second he saw Mom on the ground, the Doctor started to give instructions “Matilda, while I am checking Ms. Griffins Hylle find out whether we have her medical record. If not, have her blood, urine and liver functions tested. And also make an appointment with the radiology department we might need a MRI scan.” and he slowly placed Mom on the empty bed.
The nurse came in with several files in her hands and gave them to the Doctor. “Reanne Griffins Hylle, age 35 - diagnosed with first stage of brain tumor, rejected treatment”.
“Matilda, contact Ms. Griffins Hylle’s doctor and update him/her with the patients current status.” Before he left the room, I asked him a question.
“Doctor, Mom is not going to die, right? She will be alright, right?”
“I am sorry but at the moment I can’t answer those questions, could you please give me your Dads or an Aunts or Uncles phone number? I need to talk to someone regarding the necessary paperwork’.
“Dad is in England and I don’t have an Aunt or Uncle” I answered him.
With disbelieve in his eyes,” Is there not a distance family member who we could call?”
“Not in U.S.A, Grandma moved here when she was 20 and Grandpa was an orphan and Dad’s family is in England. So no, I don’t have a distance family that you could call.”
“Hannah, there must be someone that we can call?”
“You can call Laura who is Moms boss and Grandma’s friend”. I answered him not knowing if Laura was the right person to call.
“Okay Hannah. Can you give the nurse Laura’s phone number while I speak to your Mothers Doctor?”
“I will doctor…”
“It is Thomas Powell, and even though the circumstances are not the best, it was nice meeting you Hannah. You have done well today.” And he left the room.

After having arranged Moms stay in the Hospital, on her own, Laura also planned Grandmas funeral on the following weekend. Everyone in the village knew about the death of the old elementary school dean, Ms. Hannah Griffins Roberts.
With Mom being in the Hospital Laura was taking the condolences from the guests that wanted to honor grandma on her last journey. Her friends, colleagues, old students and many more people I don’t know.
Instead of Laura, Dad should have been here, I still cannot… No I don’t want to understand why dad could not be here with us. He might be busy be he could take two days off. He might be willing to divorce Mom but Grandma was his family even if it’s a distant one, family is family nothing is more important. I love Dad, but I won’t forgive him for not being here. Not being for Grandma, Mom and for me when we needed him most.
As it was stated in her will, grandma didn’t want to have the exaggerated ceremony so on Saturday 15 March 2000 grandma was sent to her last journey with only her loved ones on her side.
When the ceremony had ended, slowly but certainly everyone started to leave. Laura was talking to the civil funeral leader while I was standing next to grandma’s grave.
Hannah Griffins Roberts
25.11.1933 – 12. 03.2000
She lives with us in memory
and will for evermore
“Hello grandma, I hope you are happy were you are. I know you are watching over us so please protect Mom. I don’t want to lose her as well. Goodbye grandma, thank you for the love and care you gave me”. While I tried to keep my promise to not to cry, a light haired boy came next to me.
“Are you Hannah?” He asked me with a British accent.
“My name is Hannah, so I suppose I am.”
“Can you stand up? I need to do something before I can leave” he told me with annoyance in his beautiful violet - blue eyes.
I stood up to face him. Since he was taller, he must be older than me. Without hesitating, he placed his hands on my shoulder and looked deep into my eyes.
“I am sorry Hannah but I love you” and placed a gentle kiss on my lips. As shocked as I was, I saw him leaving as soon as he kissed me. Not caring to explain his action.
When I came to myself I run after him, demanding an explanation. He was about to get in to a car when I screamed” Why did you kiss me? You son of a B*tch! You should at least gave me your name!” assuming he would not hear me.
As if he heard me, with a smirk on his face he opened the black cars window and looked at my direction and screamed. “It’s Adam Clark, sweetheart” with that the car he was in drove away.
I must have stood there for a quite a while since I didn’t hear Laura approaching me. “Hannah Louise Griffins hylle, young Lady did you forget where you are? And didn’t your grandma not teach you to not to swear?” Laura was really angry, I wasn’t stupid to not to notice it.
“Sorry Laura that son of A B…sorry that boy took something from me without my agreement. So that’s why I screamed at him. This gives you no reason to blame me since I’m not the one who is in fault”.
Knowing this stubborn girl Laura knew she would not accept any punishment so for this one time she gave in.
“Let’s go Hannah your mother is waiting for us. And before I forget, Happy Birthday dear” and placed a kiss on Hannah's forehead like her grandma used to do.
