It was 6 in the morning and the first thing I saw on my phone was a stupid reminder from Facebook.
"Today is your 26th birthday".
I still do not know why I kept my Facebook profile it's not as if I used it but people liked to use Facebook, twitter or other means to keep up with you instead of taking same time to ask it personally.
I have to admit that it is more convenient to deal with people that pretended to care for you through a small screen instead of actually investing time and effect in your relationship with them even though you know it won't bear any fruit.
It also kept them away from you since everyone with whom we are surrounded are imposers who won't change for the better. You might ask how I can be so sure about it; I can tell you I have learned from the hard way.
On the week I had arrived in London I was sent to a private high school in middle of nowhere, as if dad wanted to have me looked somewhere he couldn't see me. Why did he want to have the custody over me if he was going to send me there, you might ask? Power, money and greed were the key drivers why he wanted to have me.
In the beginning I assumed it was because of this work but even when his Law firm started to become one of the best in England he still wouldn't allow me to transfer to a high school in or near London. I only saw him during the Holidays and with 'saw' I mean I saw his staff and assistants; Mr. Griffins-Hylle didn't have time to spend with his daughter, he was too busy with conquering the world.
I was counting the days to my eighteenth birthday, in contrast to my 'peers' I didn't care about the activities that I was permitted to take. I was waiting for that day so that I could leave the 'cage' I was in.
The first thing I had done on my eighteenth birthday was to see my Father. I knew he won't be at his 'home' preparing for a surprise birthday party for his one and only daughter. Who am I kidding, I went straight to his office not caring if he was in a meeting or not.
I was determined to have him listen to me until I was finished.
"Hello Father, how is your business going? I asked him casually. Not bothering to stop with his work he didn't interrupt me. "If you might remember I turned eighteen today so I want the inheritance that my grandma has left me."
"Hannah dear, did you inherit something which I don't know about?"
"Father, I am not in to your little games. I want the inheritance that grandma saved for my education."
"Ohh that inheritance, I am sorry to disappoint you dear but there is no inheritance for you to take."
I couldn't believe that he denied the inheritance grandma had left me; it was grandma and Moms savings for over 10 years with the little money they could set a side and with the interest it should have been enough for me to finish college.
"Father, you are the lawyer so could you obey your dear code of conduct and give me what rightfully is mine."
"Hannah are you sure if that is what you really want? If you just keep quit I will forgive your disrespectful actions towards me and you could quietly finish your school." If you won't take my offer, I won't be responsible for the consequences since you are old enough to take your own responsibilities. Be smart and chose well, Hannah."
"Thank you Father but as you mentioned I am old enough to take my own responsibilities."
With a nerve wracking grin he continued "If that is your final decision, as your Father I will respect it." As if he was prepared, he handed me a document with my name on it.
