When Blaze awoke the next morning he was so happy to find his mate snuggled up in his arms. She was still sleeping, clearly still worn out from their walk home. Blaze took this as an opportunity to look at her. Something about her was different but he couldn't place it. Her being fully covered in clothes also made it hard for him to place it.
He stared at her for a long time, trying to figure out what was different before she finally started to stir. Taking this as an opportunity to finally be able to move and regain feeling in his arms without having to worry about waking her, Blaze unwrapped his arms from her body. Then he got out of the nest and stood a few paces away.
"Good morning." She murmured as she sat up and rubbed her eyes. A deep rumble in Blaze's chest showed he acknowledged her comment. "Hunt." He said with hesitation. She just looked at him with her big brown eyes. Taking this as a sign that it was okay for him to leave, he left the cave.
Blaze silently ran through the forest in his wolf form. Putting his nose to the air, he took a deep breath, trying to find any sign of prey. Instead of the scent of juicy prey he was met with an out of place scent. One that brought back memories that would haunt him for the rest of his life.
Blaze's Pov.
Flashback
"Mommy! Mommy! Come quick! Daddy's hurt!" Malacoda yells as he and Daddy stumble into the cave in their human forms.
Mommy rushes to them leaving me behind in the nest. I didn't stay there though and I follow close behind her.
"What happened?" Mommy asks as she wraps her arm around Daddy and helps him over to the nest. "The bear that we saw a few days ago tried to attack me but Daddy protected me." Malacoda explains as he looks at Daddy with fearful eyes.
Daddy lays down in the nest and winces as Mommy touches his wounds. "These are deep Anwir. I don't think I can do much for them." Mommy tells him before going to grab something from the chamber Malacoda sleeps in.
She comes back with a blue cloth in her hands. "Malacoda go get me some water." I sit there and watch as Coda brings her some water cupped in his hands.
She dips the cloth in it and then wipes away Daddy's blood to reveal four deep gouges across his chest.
"What do I do?" I hear her say quietly to herself. "I'm going to be okay. Don't worry about me." Daddy says before starting to cough up blood. Mommy just wipes the blood from his mouth and sits by his side.
"Come here Blaze." Coda says as he gestures for me to sit by him at the wall across from Mommy and Daddy. I do as he says and sit by him. He wraps his arm around me and I lean against his side.
Big tears start to roll down my face as I realize my Daddy is going to die. "Coda, I'm scared." I sniffle as I wipe the tears from my eyes. "I am too." He replies.
A few hours later I feel Coda nudge me awake. "Look." Coda whispers as he points towards Daddy. I watch as he grabs Mommy's hand and brings it to his chest. I watch with shock as I realize his wound is fully healed.
"I told you I'd be okay." He tells her. "Damn you for almost leaving us!" This is just Mommy's way of saying that she's happy he's alive.
"I had to do it to protect Malacoda. Now I have to go Amelia, I have to hunt down this bear. I will not have a threat like this around my family." He says before shifting to his beast form.
