On the sixth day of life, the two pups went from being fourteen inches long and weighing four pounds each, to being a little less than nineteen inches long and a little more than seven pounds. The shift from beast form to human form is what caused them to grow so rapidly.
On the seventh day of life, Songbird regained her sight. And she was beyond excited about that because she could finally see her babies.
"Oh Blaze, they're so cute!" She cooed as she looked at her sleeping little babies. The wolf-man just smiled at his mate. The pups were laying on their backs in the nest, between the two protective parents.
"What are we going to name them?" It was wolf-man tradition for the male to name the first born and the female to name the next. Swapping off for each pup. Of course, that doesn't happen often because the female dies before multiple pups can be born.
He pointed to the one Songbird referred to her as her "little mouse" then pointed to her. He wanted her to name their second born. The baby wiggled his hand a bit in his sleep, as if he was trying to grab something. "Blaine." She said. She wanted to name the little one after her mate, but not fully name him Blaze. "Blaaane." Blaze tested the new word. "Blaine, yes."
Songbird pointed from her "little bullfrog" to her mate. Blaze eyed up his son, trying to think of a good wolf-man name for the boy. Kinvaris. "You know I can't understand you when you talk like that." She chuckled. "Kiiii-nnnn-varrr-issss." He slowly pronounced the name, making sure he hit every syllable. "Kinvaris?" She questioned. He nodded his head fervently.
Blaine and Kinvaris, my little pups. I'm going to protect you both with my life. Songbird gently stroked Blaine's fuzzy head, amazed that he wasn't born bald. Her mate continued talking to their pups, not paying any attention to his mate.
As the days turned into years the boys grew and grew. They went from babbling little babies to chattering little toddlers. Songbird was amazed at how fast her boys grew, granted Blaze was making sure they were eating more than enough, but still. They were growing so fast! She wished she had a camera to photograph all their special moments. Blaine's first steps, Kinvaris's first tooth, all the special moments. She swore spring was always when those moments happened, and it was spring now.
"Momma! Momma!" Kinvaris wailed from the bathroom passage. Songbird left Blaine alone to play with his bone toys and went to her wailing toddler. "I fell." There was Kinvaris absolutely covered in his own excrement. "I should have went with you. Stupid, stupid." She cursed herself as she banged the heel of her hand into her head.
"Grab Momma's hand Kinvaris, I'll wash you up." The young pup grabbed his Momma's hand and the two walked to the washing pool. She grabbed him by the underarms and set him in the pool. "Cold! Cold!" He cried, struggling to get out of the pool. "I know baby, but I have to clean you." She then grabbed a wash pelt and started scrubbing him clean.
A grunt pulled Blaine out of his little bone world. "Daddy!" He cheered, abandoning his toys to run to Blaze. How's my little boy? He asked, ruffling Blaine's hair. Good! I's play wiff my toys. Blaine grabbed Blaze's hand and drug him over to his toys, forcing him to sit down and see the toys up close. Daddy, this's Bahh and this's Grahh. He explained picking up a bear leg as Bahh and a raccoon rib as Grahh. Who's this? Blaze asked while picking up a deer vertebrae. Momma's toy, Zahh. Blaze was starting to notice a theme with the names and it made him smile. Play wiff me. You be Zahh. Blaine demanded as he started playing with Bahh and Grahh. Wanting to be a good father, Blaze did as his son wanted.
