RACHEL - To my surprise I got along quite well with Paris, Shay and Colin. They weren't anything like the friends I had before I moved to St. James. But I appreciated that. They didn't remind me of times I didn't want to remember. I could just enjoy their company and not think of the past.

After digesting that my grandmother might have been even more different from what I originally thought, we changed the topic and the three of them told me more about the town and the people in it.

Apparently St. James was more known for people getting lost in the forest, than anything else. Shay adamantly claimed that there had not been even one month since she was born here, that someone hadn't gotten lost or went missing. Most people reappeared after a few months or weeks and were usually outsiders, but there were some people from the surrounding towns and St. James itself as well. Those usually stayed missing, Shay said with a sigh.

Colin also introduced me to some of the locals.

Apparently Mr. Carter, their history teacher and the professor who gave them summer homework, was the only teacher from the high school who actually lived in St. James. He lived on the outskirts of the town and spent most of his time away from the other locals. Most other teachers came from the surrounding towns and villages. Some even traveled over half an hour with the train to get to school every day.

It was a trend they couldn't explain to me.

Then there were other people like Myra Greene and Devon Harland. My new neighbors.

"They are insane," Shay told us.

"They really are," Colin agreed.

"It is known all over town, that the two of them are always on edge about each other. They prank, steal, insult...everything you can think of," Paris explained further.

"And everywhere you can think of. I once saw them scream at each other right in the town square," Shay said and shook her head as if she still could not believe it.

"Please...I saw them throw candles at each other in church just two weeks ago," Paris retorted.

"Oh, I heard about that. Didn't someone land in the hospital that day?"

"Yup, poor Joe tried to stop them but it was a lost cause." Paris sighed thinking about it.

"Who is Joe?" I asked.

"Oh, the local priest. He leads the daily mass in the church," Paris explained and pointed in the direction of the church at the end of the square.

"Well, don't get between Harland and Myra. They are insane and they won't stop you from becoming collateral damage in their war against each other."

"I met Mrs. Greene before," I told them what had happened.

"Oh, dearie, never open the door for that woman. She will ravage your whole house," Colin said and shook his head sadly.
