Comet flew on. His wings ached terribly,  the scorch marks on his tail stung, and the scratches on his legs dripped with his blood. Rain and tiny pieces of hail hammered his snout and blurred his vision, but he had to go on. For his love, the dragon that he would rip the world apart for, and the dragonet inside the egg in his talons. He spied the silhouette of Jade Mountain on the horizon, and he put on a last burst of speed to reach it.

He collapsed on the cave floor, tucking the egg safely away in the shadows, and took a deep breath. The NightWings had tried to follow him, to kill the dragonet inside the egg, to avoid war with the SeaWings for tainting their royal bloodline, but the storm had helped him lose them. He had promised the mother of the dragonet that if something happened that separated them, they would meet at Jade Mountain. So when the NightWings stole his egg, and he had to sneak it away, he had to fly all the way to Jade Mountain.

Comet lay down of his back, spread his dark teal wings and gazed up at the moving stars. Wait... moving stars? An eye gleamed in the sky, and he shot to his feet, but it was too late. The NightWing reached for his throat with iron-tipped claws, but Comet dodged away and lit up all his SeaWing stripes at the same time, startling his attacker and making him stumble back in shock. Comet now recognised his attacker as Shadowclaws, a NightWing about twenty years older than him. Comet frowned. Shadowclaws was his friend's father, and he had seen him laughing and taking care of his son. He let out a bitter laugh and, with a leap, landed on Comet, pinning him down to the cold stone floor.

"Do you really think," He hissed, his dark, dark blue eyes staring into Comet's gold ones. "That you can defeat me, hybrid? Your dragonet is going to die, like you were meant to," Comet lashed out furiously, and Shadowclaws cried out in pain when Comet's claw made contact with his eye. He stumbled back, cupping his talons over the wound, blood beginning to drip through his claws. Half-blind, Shadowclaws roared a jet of fire, scorching Comet's wing and swallowing his silver scales under his wings with ash. Horrible burning pain scorched through Comet's wings, and he leapt at Shadowclaws again.

Both dragons, Teal and black scales clashing, wrestled until they were dangerously close to the edge of the cliff. Shadowclaws shoved the hybrid away from the safety of the stone ledge, and just as Comet's back talons slipped away, he dragged one claw against the biggest artery in his murderer's neck. Comet fell, and so did Shadowclaws.

Wind rushed up, blissfully cool against Comet's burns. He flapped his wings desperately, but the fire had punctured ragged holes and it hurt too much to try. Comet closed his eyes as the cliff he had fell from got further and further away. Tears streamed down his snout as he thought of his dragonet that he had never gotten to meet. I saved my family, he thought. That's what I wanted to do. I may have had to give up my life for them, but they're safe. That's what matters.                                   And then                                                                                                                                                                                                                             The shadows swallowed him up                                                                                                                                   And he was gone.
