It was 8 AM on the morning of December 22nd when I pulled back into her driveway. I glanced over and saw a real estate sign in her front yard and quietly pondered if maybe I should have paid her...but then again I was getting her one hell of a deal—yet I still felt I was the one coming out winning. But that was my life, I was the one that won—who would I be if I weren't the guy on top?
I walked up to the house with a large coffee in one hand, shades on face and used my free hand to push the bell. I heard a set of small feet scamper to the door and when it opened I smiled at the face of her son—he however, didn't reciprocate the expression.
"Mom!" he called out "The jackass is here!"
My face fell into a scorn as he moved to let me in.
"Charleston Michael!" she berated from the other room "Are those the manners I taught you?"
"Sorry." He mumbled "Dr. Jackass has arrived."
He giggled in his own little humor before running upstairs. Meredith sighed heavily as she came in the room with her younger child on her hip and set the girl down, she looked up at me and then hugged tightly onto her mother's leg. She was a beautifully shy child. Her hair was a mop of golden blonde curls like her mother, her eyes blue like her brother's. She looked like Meredith for the most part, though I had no idea what her father looked like.
"Sorry." She said "He will behave, I promise. He's just got to let out the last bit of tension before we leave."
"Hmm." I hummed "So that's what you call it. Alright, well I was his age once—Charleston? I thought his name was Charlie?"
"It is." She said "It's Charleston...like Charleston Heston. We call him Charlie for short."
"The old-school actor?" I frowned, then shrugged "And what's this one's name?"
"My daughter." She clarified, "This is Kennedy Rose, but we usually call her K or Kendy."
"Kennedy? As in John Fitzgerald Kennedy?" I laughed.
"You know what." She muttered "Mocking my choice of children's names is not a good way to start this week out. When you have the responsibility for giving a human being something they will be called for the rest of their life? You'll understand how important it is to name them something that is important to you!"
"My apologies." I forced a smile "Did you pack a bag? I'll go ahead and take it to the car."
She smirked wickedly and gave a mocking giggle of her own "Did I pack a bag...yeah, right over there...under the pile of the rest of them."
I looked in the direction of where she was pointing and gawked at the pile of suitcases and blankets stacked on top.
"Christ!" I hissed "We're only going to be there a few days."
"And my children have never spent so much as a night away from home, they need their things. It's always better to be safe than sorry."
"I'm already sorry."
"Unless you want to make a three hour drive back here with a screaming toddler in the backseat because she misses her blankie and her monkey, I suggest you shut up and start packing."
I bit my tongue as I was just ordered to do something for the first time in my life by someone who wasn't my parent—yet she was a parent, so perhaps it was just natural. I sighed and tried not to grumble too much as I loaded all the heavy suitcases and blankets onto my arms and carried them, almost falling twice, to the trunk of my car and pondered just how the hell to make it all fit. I did my best to shove it all in amongst my own things and surprisingly the trunk closed.
