One bullseye hit, four more to go. I ran through the forest practicing my archery, a breeze kept me cool and was light enough to not affect the direction of my arrows. Each day I was better, and each day my instructor Miss Jaymes yelled at me saying my hardest was not enough. Her harsh criticism must have been a teaching tactic because it fueled my desire to be the best in the town. Maybe even best in the country. While Rayander was a struggle of a country to remain free and in one piece, the people were courageous, strong, and good-hearted. The problem was our government and the world surrounding us. Unfortunately, our country was an island about the size of New York City, floating in the middle of the Atlantic. Anyways-
"Audrey STOP!" My thoughts were interrupted by Miss Jay's loud voice. An arrow was notched in my bow ready to fire, but there was something- or someone- in the way of my target. Don't think and shoot, kids. "Do you realize what you could've done? You could've killed that man!" The dude had already run off, scared by either his almost impalement or Miss Jay's loud mouth.
"I'm sorry I-"
"How many times do I have to remind you? Stay out of your head and keep your focus! Someday you'll find yourself in a lot of trouble if you don't pay attention. Got it!?"
"Yes- yes ma'am. It won't happen again."
"That's what you said last week. Give me your bow, that's enough for the day." I handed the bow over and began walking home. The bus ride would save me 2 minutes of walking but that's if I have a death wish. Bus rides here are extremely dangerous.
My mind couldn't get off the guy in front of the target. Who was he? Where did he come from? Sure I was in thought but I've never shot at anyone. It's like he just appeared out of nowhere. After a long walk home, I finally got in and flopped down on the couch.
"Hey Rey, this letter came for you. Don't know who sent it." My brother threw a letter at me, no address, just my first name. The curiosity was real. I opened it quick to find a short note, "Thanks for not shooting me earlier. Your archery needs help. Meet me at that target tomorrow (where you almost shot me) after your next lesson. I'll bring food." Well. That wasn't sketchy at all. How do they know I have a lesson tomorrow? Rather than calling the guards, I decided to go ahead and check this guy out. Also to apologize for almost killing him. And... free food.
