My trolley was heavy as I pushed it across the crowded station. My mother followed me, holding her dark green coat above her ankles, showing off what looked light green leather books. I knew better, the scaly material covering them was dragon hide, similar to the gloves in my trunk.
I approached the gap between platforms nine and ten. My mother didn't seem interested in me or anything else around her, she was now inspecting the rings littering her fingers. Knowing she would follow eventually, I entered the Hogwarts platform as I had done everything else in my life – on my own.
I closed my eyes and ran. When I opened them again, I was still surrounded by people. But not the same people. These people were also pushing trunks and holding owls in wiry cages, some were even skittering across the floor after rats and toads. I couldn't stop a smile tugging at my lips. I couldn't wait to climb aboard the bright red steam engine that was standing handsomely on the tracks, not far from me.
"Sofia darling! I'm just going to head to the bathroom. I'll come and see you off in a moment." My mother had appeared, swishing her coat around before vanishing again.
Sighing, I looked around the area, my eyes fixed on two sisters. One had dark brown hair and was tall, a yellow dress tied formally around her waist. The other was shorter, flaming red hair in a straight and thick ponytail, bobbing as she moved her head. I couldn't help but listen into what their slightly raised voices were yelling.
"Write? Why would I want to write to a freak like you? You disgust me Lily I always knew there was something wrong, something strange about you – and I was right. I never want to see you again!" The girl in the yellow dress looked anguished as she angrily pushed at her sister.
"Tuney! Why are you being like this? Why is there such a need to be cruel? The other day you were begging Professor Dumbledore to let you come to Hogwarts. I can speak to him if you like? Try and convince him to let you come along."
"Get away from me Lily. I don't want to come to your stupid school and I never want to see you again!" the girl in the yellow dress shouted the last part and stalked away from her sister to where two adults were stood, oblivious to the argument, waving goodbye to their red-headed daughter.
The girl, Lily, began to cry. Resting her head on her trunk she let the fat tears roll down her cheeks. She was heartbroken. I could see it reflected in her large green eyes.
I wasn't far from her; within three steps I was at her side, carefully placing my hand upon her back. She looked up, startled.
"Oh. Hi. Sorry, I didn't see you there." Lily gave me a watery smile and I tilted my head sympathetically.
"Don't cry, are you a first year? My name's Sofia – I couldn't help overhearing that your name is Lily. I hope you're not too upset about what your sister said but if it's any consolation I don't think you're a freak. In fact, I think you're beautiful.
Lily perked up, wiping her slightly swollen eyes and grinning at me "thank you Sofia, that means a lot. Yeah I am, I only found out the other day that witches and wizards even exist! I'm so excited to come to Hogwarts!"
I grinned at her enthusiasm. I was certainly shyer than this bubbly young girl but her excitement reflected what I was feeling inside of me.
Suddenly, a shadow was cast over my little patch of sunlight and I turned and looked up.
