It was that fleeting hour of day when the moon and sun are high and bright at the same time. Like many things in my life, these summer nights wouldn't last much longer.I sat quietly on a tree stump near the pond I grew up by. Every life-changing decision I had made was made in this very spot. When I decided to ask my parents for a guitar for Christmas, when I started writing my first song, when I decided to start a band with my friends, when I decided to run away from home.
Not only had this been my safe haven, but this place was secret. Well, almost secret. The only other person I had ever brought here was Julie. I knew she would love it. The wind whipping through the trees seemed to sing her name, and the lake glistens the same way her eyes do. Everything about this place was beckoning for her presence, and I couldn't have been more excited to share it with her.
We shared plenty of memories here, her and I. We came here often, sometimes to swim or hang out, but other times just to sit in the peaceful atmosphere the location provided for us. Not only that, but she and I had shared our first kiss here.
Time seemed to have go by so fast since then. Shortly after the boys and I became tangible to Julie, we became visible and tangible to everyone else too. I still don't know why we're here, or what brought us back, but, if I'm honest, I don't really care anymore. Whatever brought me here brought me to Julie, and I couldn't be happier.
It's been seven years since we showed up in Julie's mom's studio. The band has taken off professionally, and our newest song is number one on the Top 100 Trending Billboard.
Julie and I have been dating for five years now, and she is the light of my life. She's my rock, my soulmate, my partner. She's always there for me when I need her most, and I love her so much. She's a sight for sore eyes with a beautiful soul, an insane amount of talent, and the sweetest smile I've ever seen. She's everything to me.
The cool summer chill brushes through the strands of my hair that line my face, and I sweep them away from my eyes. I glance towards the lake, the sight of it pulling me in. The pool of water shimmers in the starlight, and I found myself walking towards it.
Sitting down next to the water, I kick off my shoes and slip my feet into the cool lake. It's truly a beautiful night. The stars are shining, the air is crisp, the sky is clear. It's perfect, just the way I had hoped it would be.
Realizing I need to text Julie, I stick my hand into my pocket to pull out my phone. My fingertips brush lightly across the velvet box.
Quickly, I text Julie, asking her (,probably quite desperately,) to come meet me at our spot because I have something important to show her. She responds almost immediately.
Sighing, I lean back so that I'm laying down, staring up at the sky. Yes, the stars have guided me before, and I trust they'll do it again, because, for better or for worse, I'm in it for the long haul.
