Chapter 6

'The Ghost of Her Past'

Ross was feeling exhausted and sore, which was clearly an understatement considering what he had been through today. Every muscle in his entire body ached - it seemed like there was no way he could sleep without the help of sleeping pills and pain meds because he couldn't find a position that allowed him to sleep without wincing in pain every now and then. It took him nearly two hours to finally somewhat fall asleep and sometimes around midnight, he stirred from his sleep and suddenly his whole body tensed. Someone was definitely watching him, he could feel it. His first instinct was to grab something to protect him, but then within seconds, a familiar scent hit his nostrils and he didn't have to open his eyes to find out who the intruder was.

"Rach?" He murmured, moving slightly as he opened his eyes and that was when he found her sitting on the foot of his bed – apparently staring at him. "Wh-what are you doing here?"

"I, uh." She stammered and her voice was thick with emotions. "I.."

He was still half asleep but he could clearly see how her shoulder shook and suddenly soft sobs came out from her lips. He sat up carefully, wincing in pain as he tried to move his arms - thankfully the room was too dark for her to see him winced, god know it'd only made her sobs worse. He propped himself against the headboard, taking a deep breath to manage his pain and when he saw her tears streaked face , his face softened and his pain didn't matter anymore because all he wanted to do right now was to make her feel better. He wanted nothing but to soothe her, asking her what was bothering her and do everything in his power to make her feel better. He hated seeing her in such a state, he hated seeing her cry.

"Rach.." He breathed, opening his arms for her to hold when their gaze locked. "Come here." He murmured. "It's okay. You're not going to hurt me. Come."

She was hesitant at first, but then she stood up and sat right next to his left, leaning her head against him gingerly. He pulled her closer and as his left hands sneaked its way to her smaller back, he breathed in all the scents that made her hers, holding her as close as his body allowed him too and then he gave her a kiss on the side of her head.

"I-I just.." He heard her whimper before she broke into another round of crying.

Her petite figure shook vigorously against him as she cried and his mind was racing with so many thoughts. He knew she was upset and that she was worried about him, but he never would've thought he'd find her sitting on the edge of his bed, watching him sleeping and actually crying. This accident must've taken a toll on her and somehow upset her more than he thought it would be.

He didn't really get it though, he was fine.

The doctor said he was fine and she was there to hear it all. He was going to be fine, but why was she still so upset? He wondered.

"Hey, look at me." He murmured softly as his thumbs grazed against her chin, forcing her to look up. She hiccupped and with her teary eyes, she finally complied. "I know you're scared, but I'm okay." He continued. "Here.." He brought her hand into his chest, letting her feel how his heart beat against it. "Can you feel that?" She chewed her lips and nodded tentatively. "It's still beating, alright. I'm here. I'm okay."

"I was so scared." She whispered softly.

"I know." He sighed as he brushed her tears away delicately with his thumbs. "Me too." He whispered.

"You were scared?"

"Uh-hmm.. For a split moment, yeah." He admitted, giving her a soft smile. "I didn't know what happened to me, but yeah. I was scared for a moment there, but not anymore, because I know I'm going to be okay."
