Juno's POV:
Dammit!
The ball was going to hit the floor. I knew from the second I'd made the one-touch that it was going down. My stupid finger had changed its spin and the libero wouldn't be able to pick it back up.
I heard the sound of it hit the floor and cringed.
"Sorry guys, that was my bad!" I shout. "It hit my finger and spun awkwardly. I'm sorry!"
My close friend Azmina came up behind me and hit the back of my head.
"What the hell was that for?!" I yelp.
"For being an idiot. We lost one point, it's fine! We'll just have to win the next one, OK?" Azmina said.
I nod and walk towards the red line, ready to receive the next serve. Let's get this one back! The other team served and I heard my teammate Sunny yell that it was her ball. I begin my approach towards the net so the setter would be able to set me the ball and I would be able to hit it straight down.
"Outside!" I yell.
"Alright!" The setter, Emily shouts back.
She sets me the ball, one that was high and just in front of the net. I see the blockers jump up but they are too slow. I slam it with all the strength and hear the sound of it hitting the ground.
That felt good, I think. The team huddles around, Maeve hi-fiving me.
"That was a beautiful spike," Phoebe says. "The set looked on point as well."
"Thanks," I say.
"It did seem like a good set, I have to admit it too since I was the one who did it. It hit your hand at the exact right time," Emily said. "Did it feel okay?"
"Yeah, that was the best set I've had all game!" I say, giving her a quick pat on the back. She shoots me a smile.
The umpire blows the whistle and we all get back into position, Azmina on the serve.
"Lets get a good serve Azmina!" I cheer at her. She laughs and bounces the ball until the second whistle blows, telling her she could serve.
Azmina serves, I feel the wind of it over my head. It drops over the net and the other team fails to receive it properly and it goes out of court.
"Yeah! Nice serve!" Sunny goes back to give Azmina a hug.
"Match point, Pine Hill Academy," The umpire says.
Yes! This is it, then we'll win the entire tournament! Then I can go home and finally rest.
It was like I'd jinxed myself. And the whole team. I don't know how, I guess luck wasn't on my side.
This purple mist began to spread along the ground and I watched Emily be the first one to fall. My heart leapt straight into my throat but my body was too slow to react.
"What... the fuck?" Azmina whispered, her eyes sliding closed.
"Hey!" I yell, panic building up in my stomach. "Don't fall asleep! Don't fall!"
I felt the effects of the mist begin to take control of my body, darkness blurring my vision. I saw the lumps of the other teams on the courts beside and around mine on the floor. My family who were sitting and cheering me on were asleep and I fell, hitting my head on the ground.
Darkness rushed into my eyes and I blacked out.
This is my first book, and it's only chapter one. I'll keep writing the other chapters but for now, this is what you have!
I hope you like it so far ^^
