Juno's POV
When I walked out of my dorm with Azmina, I felt a bit lighter then I did that morning. After my family were killed, I was a walking husk, nothing was inside of me except for numbness and despair. That sadness had crept back a little but every now and then my heart aches thinking of them and how I won't see them again.
It's very rare for me to show my emotions like I did this morning. I try my best to keep them at bay, building them up into something else inside of me. That's partly why I took up volleyball. With every spike or serve, I hit it as hard as I can and that's my emotion display. Everything bundled up inside of me boils over as I play and I hit the shit out of anything I can.
You see an opportunity to kill the ball, you take it. That's just how volleyball works....for me anyway.
"We have to watch them play alright?" Azmina says this like it's a question.
"Yeah obviously," I say, rolling my eyes. "Besides, Tyler and Charlie deserve it."
I notice Azmina blush a little at Tyler's name, her eyes soften a little.
"What are you looking at me for?" Azmina asks, raising an eyebrow, the pinkness in her cheeks vanishing.
"Eh? You got a crush?" I jokingly poke her and she turns a deeper shade of red as she tries to push me away.
"What! Me? No way," Azmina protests, shaking her head enthusiastically. "No."
I smirk a little. "Uh huh. Well this means Charlie's all mine then huh?"
Azmina smiles a little. "I mean, I guess so."
Azmina picks up the pace, practically jogging down the hallway and into the open court. I spot my team and then almost instantly see Charlie and Tyler running laps around the court, laughing at each other. It does nothing but bring a smile to my face in spite of the dark times.
Charlie sees me but doesn't have time to talk because his team is beginning to pepper.
(*pepper is where you get into partners and do some passing)
I took a seat on the sidelines, Azmina sitting next to me. I smile at her and watch the boys pass. Movement in the hallway catches my eye as I see Phoebe and Sunny walking towards us, taking a seat quietly next to me. Phoebe shivers and I put my arm around her.
"I'm freezing!" she exclaims. "Anyone else?"
Azmina shakes her head and I do too. Sunny shifts her hand in a sideways motion.
"So-so," she says, resting her hand back down and flicking her hair. "It's not warm in here but when we play our game at 4, we'll get hot pretty quick."
My heart jumps a little. I'd forgotten about the game this afternoon. I don't even know who we're playing. I'd only hope that it'd be an easy team. However, the thought of killing someone who was the same age as her made her stomach churn. An innocent 17 or 18 year old who had a life ahead of them. Getting killed by someone who just wanted to survive.
In this game, everyone wants to survive. But that won't happen.
A whistle stuns me and my focus switches back to the game where the boys were in rotation. I wasn't surprised to see that Charlie was a setter. He was tall so it made sense. People who were short could set too but if you were taller, you had an advantage. Tyler was playing as a pass hit. He wasn't short, around the average height for a 17 year old. It'd be fun to watch the two pull off combo's.
Since it was rotation 1, the setter served first so Charlie grabbed the ball. The ball made a sweet crack as he hit it three times, walking slowly towards the service line. The umpire blew the whistle and moved his hand towards the net. Charlie stepped forward, raised his arm and served it; flat, fast and hard.
I looked at the other team who miss-received the ball and gripped Phoebe's shoulder tightly. She whines and looks at me.
"What?"
"That's- Juneville Highschool," I say, my voice trembling. "They have a boys team."
Azmina raised her eyebrows and squinted at the other team. She bobbed her head slightly in agreement. Sunny looked surprised.
"I didn't know they had another team," she said. "Did any of you?"
"No, I don't think any of us did." Phoebe shakes her head.
Juneville High has a boys' team, I think. Which means that they'll be pretty good, the girls' team were. My chest tightens.
The girls' team who'd beaten my family which resulted in their deaths. Their captain who was a total dickhead. Their captain who I want to beat the most.
The captain who I would be fine to watch die in front of me.
