"S-Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt. Actually I'm surprised that anyone is here, I thought I was the only one who knew about this place", the boy stuttered.
Eunjung blushed out of embarrassment of the boy hearing her screams and rambled, "No, it's f-fine, you can join me here, I was feeling lonely anyway."
She wiped her tears and moved to the side to make room for her guest.
"My name is Eunjung, by the way. I'm a freshman at the university."
The boy stretched out next to her and tilted his head up to face her.
"I'm Doyoung, a sophomore. Nice to meet you, although this might not be the best conditions to meet someone new", he smiled.
Eunjung grimaced, "Yeah, sorry about that. I promise I'm normally not like this."
"Wait, you're soaking wet! Here, put this over you."
He shrugged off his coat and draped it over Eunjung's shoulders. Eunjung blushed and unintentionally, a tear rolled down her face as she did not think she would even be cared for in a night like this.
Doyoung looked over at her and softly asked, "Want to share your thoughts? I promise I won't tell anyone, and I'm also a good listener."
Eunjung, half-drunk but still conscious enough to think about this decision, pondered it for a moment.
I just met this boy, I can't just tell him everything! But, I really really want to talk to someone about all my problems and he looks pretty trustable. And very pretty.
Eunjung's cheeks turned an even deeper shade of red when she realized what she just thought, and she snapped back into the present.
"Ok, but you have to promise to keep this a secret."
Doyoung's eyes locked in hers, full of sincerity. "I promise."
"And you have to drink with me", she muttered, tossing him a bottle. Doyoung chuckled in surprise and nodded. "Alright, I will, I will!"
Eunjung recounted her situation with Doyoung, tears fully streaming down her face when she got to her phone call with her dad. The whole time she talked, Doyoung gazed at her steadily, encouraging her to spill everything that she had been holding in for the past few months.
"I-I just don't know what to do anymore. How am I going to survive in this world?"
Doyoung took a long sip of his drink before replying. "You know, I have a similar experience. You probably think that no one will understand, but I think I can relate a bit."
Before starting his story, he looked over at Eunjung.
"I haven't told this to anyone but strangely, I feel obliged to now after you told me everything", Doyoung said with a teasing smile.
Eunjung softly laughed, partly because of what he said, but partly of relief that she found someone who could relate. Doyoung, now satisfied after making Eunjung laughed, proceeded to tell his story.
"So I don't know how to begin this, so I'm just going to tell you straight, "My parents both died when I was young from a car accident." Eunjung gasped and looked at him, shocked.
"Don't even think about pitying me, I'm fine. Well not really, but you get what I'm trying to say. So well now, I live with my aunt, who does not give any fucks about me at all, and only agreed to take me in for the money she got from it. Of course she didn't spend a cent on me. So, I was forced to get a job at an early age and take care of myself. Now I have to get perfect grades while balancing a part time job so I can get a more stable job and earn enough to keep me more than just alive."
He winked, countering the somber mood in the air. Doyoung continued in a more serious tone, "Yeah, I understand what it feels like to be thrown out and having to fend for yourself. I've experienced it for quite a while. All I have left is my grandma, who is honestly the only reason I keep going in life."
Eunjung sat quietly and nodded. They both sighed and gazed out at the pond; the rain had now stopped and all was calm. In the past, it was very hard for Eunjung to calm down when her anxiety spiraled out of control in situations similar to today, but strangely, she felt a comforting aura from Doyoung that made her relax, exhaustion finally catching up to her.
"Yah, Doyoung, was it? Your voice is... comforting, did you know that? I don't want to return to my life... and have to deal with people... can't we just stay here.. Forever?"
Doyoung smiled as he watched Eunjung's eyes slowly close as she floated off into dreamland, soju bottle still in hand. "I really wish we could do that, Eunjung."
Realizing that it was too late at night and that Eunjung was asleep and drunk, Doyoung decided to carry her back to his apartment because he had no idea where Eunjung lived.
This isn't weird right? It's true that we did just meet today, but it would be even worse of me to leave her here in this state all alone. It will just be for one night anyways.
"Hey Eunjung, I'm taking you to my apartment because I don't know where you live, I can't enter the female dorms anyways. I won't do anything weird, you can trust me."
Eunjung grunted an "ok" in reply, conscious enough to hear what he said. Doyoung gathered both of their stuff in one hand and carefully helped Eunjung onto his back.
"Hold on tight, ok?"
He felt Eunjung's hands tighten around his neck and set off on the path to his apartment. Although it was hard to carry both of their stuff as well as Eunjung on his back at the same time, Doyoung made it to the apartment and opened the door. He slowly set Eunjung down on his bed, since he had no guest room, and pulled up the covers. Eunjung was fully dry by then, the rain gone from her clothes. Doyoung wrote a note explaining why she was in his apartment so she wouldn't be scared when she woke up in an unfamiliar place, and set it on the table next to her. He left the room and settled down in the couch, replaying the night's events in his head.
"It's weird.. I can see myself in her from when I was young. I've never opened up to anybody about my past, not even Taeyong, but I opened up to this girl, who I just met today. She's a special person, I feel the need to help her get back on her feet after what happened to her."
