Chapter Sixteen
Governor Leos
"What do you mean she's gone? How is it possible for a person to disappear while utilizing the toilet? None of what you are telling me is making any sense. How did you lose my sister?"
Governor Leos stopped from pushing the door open to his office. The office his son currently occupied. The barely controlled voice of Elliot made him listen in. His heart started to beat rapidly at the words he heard.
"How many incompetent fools are there in the military? Watching and protecting my sister is a simple task. The simplest assignment any soldier could have. Surely you should have seen anyone who entered the restroom while she was in it…..only one woman?….did you take her in for questioning?...Was there anyone else in there when she entered?...Another woman with a hat and big purse….Did you take her in for questioning?...I want that woman found and I want her questioned, NOW!"
The soon to be former Governor had heard enough. He entered his office. Elliot stood behind his desk gripping the phone and looking furious. He looked up at his father's entrance. Tom watched as his son made an effort to relax his features.
"Dad." Elliot made a rather scary attempt at a smile, "I thought you were resting."
Tom peered at his son, attempting to decipher what was going on. "Yes, I took a nap and now I'm well rested. Elliot, who were you talking to? Where is Chessa?"
"Chessa? Why do you ask about Chessa?" He sat down the phone and went around the desk. "Have you had lunch? Cook has made an excellent lobster roll. You should try it."
"Elliot, I may be getting older and you have convinced me to let you run for governor, but I am no fool," Tom said wearily, "Tell me what is going on with my daughter."
Elliot sighed, "We don't know, Dad. She...disappeared. She entered a restroom in the department store and...she never came out."
Not again. The Governor's chest started to tighten up. He clutched it. He didn't realize that he was having a heart attack until he was on the floor.
Gavin
The four of them; Mark, Ava, Gavin and Chessa stood outside the courthouse; each of them stunned in their own way. Mark was the first to laugh and the three others joined in.
"Well that was anticlimactic and disappointing," Mark finally said after he stopped laughing.
They had just been thrown out of the courthouse. No threats of arrests, just a slightly greying woman calmly escorting them out when she realized they were there for a marriage license. The four had gone without a fight. After all they weren't there to make a scene but a point.
"The idea of getting married was starting sound really nice too," Ava shook her head, her high dark ponytail swishing back and forth.
Gavin regarded her. He had to admit being in love looked good on her. Mark had long since coaxed her out of her shell. She wore her hair pulled back more often, rarely if ever having it covering her face. It revealed to all what Mark had already seen; she was a looker.
Mark looked down at her with the eyes of a man in love, "Well, maybe someday."
Ava's response was to blush. "But it could really never happen." She told him.
He shrugged, "Maybe not on paper, not now. But a marriage is a commitment between two people not the state in which they live in. We really don't need the likes of them to recognize our marriage. That is if we ever choose to get married."
