Chapter Nineteen
Chapter Dedication: This chapter is dedicated to Lara Smith.
Chessica: A day later
Chessa was immediately aware of the stares and whispers that followed her when she entered the lecture hall. She was getting use to people staring at her, but this was a whole new level of fascination for her they were displaying. Some even had the nerve to point.
She glanced at Gregory who took his usual spot at the back, standing. As far as bodyguards went he was pretty decent. He wasn't as formal as the others. He kept formalities as he was required to do, but their relationship was more of that of friends than protector and the protected.
She liked that.
He gave her a brief smile before she sat in the middle where she wouldn't be conspicuous. She liked to blend in with the crowd.
However, today that was not happening.
As soon as she sat, the woman in front of her turned around. Her face scrunched up in a sympathetic manner.
"I am so sorry, Chessa. I didn't know that happened to you. It must be awful to have to bear with that alone for so many months. It's good that you came out and told someone."
Chessa's expression betrayed her confusion. What in the world was she talking about?
"I know," the obviously not too bright woman continued, "You probably don't want to talk about it. That's understandable. I just want to let you know that it's not your fault. Don't listen to those idiots who are talking about how you deserve it because you're a tr- well, because you have compassion for the coloreds. I may not agree with you, but nobody deserves to be raped."
Chessa blanched. Raped! "W-what?" She stammered, "I wasn't….who said I was…" Her mind flashed back to Elliot in her room.
Were you raped? Is that why you're not telling me? If you were raped, Chessa, you have to tell me.
Elliot. What had he done?
She stood shakily form her chair. Grabbing her books she hurried out of the lecture hall. Even as she retreated she could feel the eyes of her fellow classmates burning into her.
Gregory was right behind her. "Not feeling up to class today?" He asked lightheartedly, keeping step with her.
She gave him a look brimming with tears and anger, "No. Apparently I've been raped, so no I don't feel up to class today."
Gregory stopped briefly as they made their way down the hall.
Chessa doubled her pace.
He had to break into a sprint to catch up with her.
"I'm sorry, Chessa. Elliot meant well."
She stopped and turned angry eyes on Gregory.
"You knew about this? You let me walk into that classroom knowing rumors were being spread about me? You couldn't have warned me?"
Gregory looked shell shocked. "I thought you knew, Chessa. I was sure he told you he went to the press with your rape."
"I wasn't raped!" Chessa yelled, her voice carrying through the halls.
Some people passing stopped to stare.
Chessa glared at them.
They kept moving.
Gregory's brows scrunched up, "So you're not pregnant then?"
Chessa just stared at him. In her head a debate ensued on whether she should tell him or not.
