Chapter Six
Gavin: two weeks later
"What are you doing, Gavin?" Diamond sat beside her brother on the floor.
His already fragile concentration broke and he pushed his homework aside. He placed an arm around her shoulders, "Just getting an education, Sis." It was the last of the weekend and Chessa insisted she see his finished assignments before Monday.
Diamond leaned against him. "You're very smart."
Gavin snorted, "I doubt it."
"Well, you are. Don't ever forget that little brother.”
"I'll try not to." He began to gather his scattered papers and shut his school book.
Suddenly Diamond sat up. "You're not going anywhere, are you?"
He slowly nodded. She grabbed his arm in a grip stronger than he thought possible. "No, Gavin. Don't go. Stay with me."
Gavin thought of Chessa waiting for him at their cave. He looked into Diamond's round frightened eyes. He nodded, "Okay, Diamond. I'll stay."
Her grip relaxed but her hand stayed put. "Thank you."
He sighed. Maybe he could get to the cave before curfew, but he doubted Chessa would wait that long.
Chessica
He stood her up! Chessa couldn't believe it. And to make matters worse she came home to find her dad had left town on an emergency meeting of the governors and the President.
She opted to eat alone in her room. Mary understood and let her be. She barely ate her roast beef and mashed potatoes. The food was pushed around on her plate until she sat it down on her nightstand and crawled into bed. She snuggled Penelope against her and eventually fell asleep.
Chessa sat up and looked around. Something had woken her from her light slumber but she wasn't sure what. The tap came again. She climbed out of bed clutching onto Penelope. She crept to the window sure the noise was coming from there. Pulling back the drapes, she peered down to where her window overlooked her mother's garden.
There stood Gavin, blond hair shining in the light of the moon. Another small object hit her window. Chessa assumed it was a pebble. She opened her window and poked her head out. "Gavin! What are you doing here?" Her eyes quickly scanned the dark that surrounded him. If he was caught breaking curfew he would be thrown in jail.
In response Gavin began to scale the brick wall leading to her bedroom. She watched until he entered through the window and dropped on to her white carpet. His ratty boots sunk into the plush carpeting muffling the sound of his landing.
"Gavin Monte!" Chessa's eyes were round saucers in her face, "What are you doing out after curfew? It's dangerous! How were you not caught?"
He just grinned as his eyes roamed her room. "Your sense of style hasn't changed much since you were eight I see."
The room was bursting with lavender and fuchsia from the walls to her bed spread. His eyes rested on Penelope who was being choked mercilessly by Chessa's right hand. "My point exactly."
She grew hot and quickly put Penelope down.
"I didn't want you to think I forgot about you, Chessica. I didn't purposely not show up," He strolled further into the room like he owned the place.
Chessa continued to watch him, not sure sixteen year old Gavin, tall and starting to get muscular, fit in her room. He was such a stark contrast to room that was-and she could admit-slightly girlish.
