Prologue
"She really is a beautiful baby," the fair skinned woman told the darker skinned woman as they sat drinking tea on the patio.
It was a normal thing for two women to do on an afternoon; sit, drink tea and chat. However, it was not so normal for these two particular women. They were friends. They considered each other to be the best of friends. This in itself was a dangerous abnormality.
It just so happened one of the women had eyes the color of the misted sky and the other had dark brown doe eyes. One was a colored and one was a Brown; one a servant and one the wife of the Governor.
"You are too kind, Alice." The brown-eyed, darker skinned woman replied, looking down at her sleeping daughter. Indeed her child was a sight to behold. Her gaze shifted and she smiled at the golden hair tot who stood at the babe's side.Apparently her freind's two year old seemed to think so as well. He stared into the bassinet as if mesmerized.
"It's only the truth, Ms. Leos," The blue eyed, fair skinned woman blushed. She looked down and rapidly stirred a recently added sugar cube in her tea. The brightly shining sun beat down hard on the two women and she was glad to have the pink, straw hat her friend gave her many months ago. It was one of many gifts she had to keep hidden from her husband. There was no telling what he would do if he were to find out she was accepting gifts from her employer.
"Please, Alice, we have been friends for years. When no one is around you are to call me Eleanor." Eleanor delicately sipped her tea from her silver spoon before dipping it back in her rose pattern tea cup.
Alice's blush deepened, "If Governor Leos were to find us being so familiar with one another…" She trailed off and her gaze landed on her son, "He is smitten with your daughter, you know. Hates her to be out of his sight."
The blond boy had the intensity of no two year-old either woman had seen.
"At home he bounces off the walls. Here he takes the responsibilities of a guard."
The brown-eyed woman smiled. For a moment the only thing making sounds were their spoons against the tea cups.
At first Alice hesitated to speak, the thought she wanted to get out being quite controversial. But she remembered she was with her friend. Taking a slow sip of her tea, she gave herself enough time to gather her courage. Finally she said, "Maybe there will come a day when my son and your daughter will become friends or maybe even more than friends."
Eleanor's smile faded as a sudden sadness washed over her, "I wish we lived in a world where that was possible."
Alice looked at her son and the baby girl she felt was like her own child. "If a colored like me and a Brown like you can be friends anything is possible."
