Chapter Thirteen

Gavin

"Faster, Monte!" Noel hissed as they made their way across the rocky terrain to their getaway car.

He would have gone faster, but he didn't want to jostle Chessa any more than he already was. Though she was doing a good job of that herself, with her kicking and attempts to scream through her gag.  He was certain she had figured out he wasn't exactly the good guy. The thought left him feeling sucker punched. What was he doing? No. He couldn't think about it. He just had to do it. He was making his dad proud, that's all that mattered.

They reached the car parked in an isolated parking lot. Gavin opened the door with one hand and laid her carefully in the backseat.

Noel stared at him. "I thought we were going to put her in the trunk. Someone might see her there!"

Gavin tossed him a withering look before walking to the trunk and retrieving a blanket. He slammed the trunk and came back around. He gently covered Chessa with the blanket and shut the door.

He went to the driver seat as Noel stalked to the passenger side.

"I want you to sit down and shut up," Gavin whisper-hissed. He ducked into the car and shut the door with such force the rickety old car shook.

It was Noel's turn to glare at him as he settled in the car, but he stayed silent during the drive. His silence only broken with an occasional chuckle at Chessa's moans.

Noel's amusement at Chessa's discomfort only served to annoy  Gavin. As far as he was concerned the drive to the warehouse didn't end soon enough.

He parked underneath some trees  in effort to make the car look abandoned. His main goal was to get Chessa away from Noel as soon as possible. He carried her from the car into the warehouse and to the small room they prepared for her. It was nothing but four corners with a cot. At one point in time it may have been an office.

He laid her on the cot. Chessa tried to sit up as soon as he let go. Her tied hands prevented her from doing so and her groan of frustration let Gavin know she wasn’t pleased with it. He reached for her. She flinched at his touch. With a deep sigh, he grabbed her and sat her upright. She cowered as he untied the blindfold.

The small light in the room wasn't bright, but judging by her squinting eyes it was bright enough.  He decided to leave before her eyes had a chance to adjust. He knew once they focused, they would look at him with nothing but loathing.

"Have a happy reunion?" Noel sneered. He sat at the card table in the middle of the warehouse, munching on a peanut butter sandwich.

"Shut up." It was times like this that he missed Mark. He sat across from Noel and grabbed the jar of peanut butter. Unsteadily he began spreading the thick substance on a slice of bread.

"I think Dad's right. You're not cut out for this. Why don't you run home and get some sleep. I'll take care of her for the night."

Over his dead body. The gleam in Noel's eyes made Gavin sick. There was no way he was leaving Chessa alone with him. In fact, he had no intentions of leaving her with any of his co-conspirators. The sooner she was out of there and back home the better. He only hoped the Governor wouldn't be a fool and do as they said.

He took a bite of his bread and swallowed. It tasted like sawdust. He barely choked it down before posting himself by Chessa's room for the night. He didn't trust Noel and he didn't want to give the man any opportunities to be near her.

Gavin was already a light sleeper, but sleep eluded him altogether that night. Each time his eyelids closed he would be haunted by visions of Chessa's brown eyes staring at him.
