- chapter twenty -

“Psst, Kie, wake up.” A gentle voice shook me awake.

My eyes drifted open and I yawned.

“Oh, good, you’re awake,”

“JJ?”

“Yes?”

“Okay.”

“Okay,”

I smiled and thought about our conversation last night, not that I remembered much.

“Where’s everyone else?” I asked drowsily.

“Probably looking for us,”

I suddenly jolted awake, panic flooding through me.

“Calm down, Kie! It’s alright, don’t panic.” He brushed my hair away from my face.

I sat up and realized that we’d both been laying in the sand sleeping.

I pushed my hair away from my face and looked up at the sun. Its rays were bright enough to burn through my eyes.

“Kiara?” A voice said. 

“JJ!” Another said.

I looked at the source of the sound and saw a worried Sarah and Pope coming my way.

“Where have you two been?” Pope demanded.

“Asleep,” JJ offered.

“Why didn't you tell us?" Sarah looked at us in shock.

"I thought you guys were mad at each other," Pope said, "I thought - oh!" It finally dawned on him.

"Yeah," JJ stretched the word out.

"We've been looking for you two!" Sarah exclaimed.

"Sorry for not telling you." I said apologetically.

Sarah smiled slightly and nodded her head towards where the two came from.

"Let's go back, shall we?"

JJ and I stood up and began to follow them. I leaned on JJ and he put his arm around my back. He was so warm and I wished I could be there forever.

When we got back, there was a surprise.

Cleo and John B were standing… with a boat.

"What the hell?" JJ said.

"How the f-?"

"We found it! It was literally just there, in a tangle of leaves!" John B explained.

My jaw dropped.

"We… we have a boat!"

Inside, my heart dropped.

Sure, we got a boat, but then why do I feel like everything has to do with the figure?

"I hope everything goes smoothly." Cleo said, voicing our inner thoughts.
