Everyone stopped talking. I didn't look up or even moved I simple stood with my head bowed next to the Winter Soldier.
"Hey what's this-" Steve started to say but the Winter Soldier interrupted him.
"Lucky?" I nodded but kept looking down, my hands were beginning to shake.
"At ease Lucky, no need to comply." I looked up to see the Winter Soldier with a kind but confused look on his face. Steve was staring back and forth between us.
"Let's go talk in the green house Steve, Winter Soldier." Everyone else slowly resumed chatting and a few more people entered the building. I led them to my green house and we entered.
"Lucky," he turned to me, "I thought all Duos were killed in the freak accident at the base."
"Wait first of all how do you know Lucky-" Steve faltered at the name.
"I was assigned to Winter Soldier for a little while. We went on certain missions together." I turned back to him
"I go by Bucky now." He smiled politely at me
"I was so happy to see on the news that you were alive. I didn't know that Steve saved you." We talked for a little while and it turned out the Bucky was the long lost friend of Steve. And we told Steve about how he saved me and I saved him during missions. And I also told Bucky how I stopped the other Duos.
The Winter Soldier or Bucky was one of the only people I could trust.
We eventually went back to the party to see people enjoying good food and getting drunk. Bucky, Steve and I remained together for most of the night and naturally I drew towards Bucky. Throughout the night I would stand on his right. It was habit. It also helped me stay away from Steve's eyes. I still am felling quite uncomfortable with my scars.
Bucky left us to go make sure The Falcon, who was the dark skinned man, was ok. His presence was like a storm. The air thickened and you could sense it from miles away. Steve came right up behind me and out his hand around my waist. He guided me outside to the balcony and looked up at the stars. His hand was still on me.
"Why won't you look at me tonight?" His words were quiet.
"I didn't want to be seen by you." I could feel the pain in my stomach. The pain of making him feel bad. It was torture.
"Why don't you want me to see you?" He looked down and looked into my eyes. They were greener tonight. I took a big breath in and stepped closed into Steve's space. His breath hitched.
"I don't want you to see my scars. I didn't think about it until right before the party but my scars are kind of...scary." Again I surprised myself. I bumped my forehead against his chest and left it there.
"Oh come here." He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me in close. It was a hug. My first hug in so so long. Not a friendly hello hug but a real hug with a real emotion behind the hug.
"Your scars are apart of you and they do not scare me." I cried just a little bit and wrapped my arms around him.
"I mean my best friend has a metal arm. That's pretty terrifying." We both laughed and hugged him tighter before letting go.
"Steve?" I looked up at his handsome face.
"You look amazing tonight." He smiled so brightly. He took my hand and gave a light kiss to it.
"You look breathtaking sweetheart." He threw in a small wink and we joined the party.
