When we got back to the car Steve shut the door dramatically. Looking over at me he flashed those blue eyes at me.
"So what music do you like?" The snap of his seatbelt followed his question.
"Umm.... it's been a while since I really had a choice of music, but I've always liked ragtime." I crossed my arms and squeezed them tightly around myself. My head was pounding. Everything was swirling around me. I squeezed my eyes shut. Solid black surrounded me. The air was stale around me creating a very desolate aroma. My head stopped hurting so I opened my eyes.
I heard something click then a very familiar sound flew to my ears. Ragtime!
My eyes flew open to the sound of my favorite song.
"Maple leaf rag," I spewed out the name, "this is my favorite!" The smile grew and grew on my face. My hands flew to the dashboard. I started to slap my fingers across acting as it was a piano.
My hair flew back and forth with every stroke of an imaginary key.
A laugh bubbled threw me, music is so wonderful I couldn't help but enjoy it.
At the end of the song and the final few notes I looked over to see Steve smiling his head off while staring at the road.
"Thank you," I pulled my hair out of the rubber band letting it flow across my shoulders. He just kept smiling like an idiot. Within minutes Avengers Tower crawled into view. Within a few more minutes we were pulling into a parking space. Jumping out I followed Steve back in.
America, America.....
Steve's head whipped around.
"TONY, STOP CHANGING MY RINGTONE!" He flipped out a phone and punched a few buttons on the screen. Holding up the phone to one ear he held up a one with the other hand and walked away.
Not wanting to eavesdrop with my heightened senses I walked to the front desk. A tall blond women sat behind the sleek metal desk. Robin Landé....interesting. Her silver name plate also read, servicing for three years.
"Miss Landé do have any water?" The women perked up, her golden curls flew innocently over her shoulder as she turned. She reached into a small fridge, pulled out a bottle of water, and handed it to me.
"Thank you." She nodded at me then returned to her phone.
"So, good news and bad news," Steve's voice found my ears causing me to turn around.
"Ok bad news first."
"Well... it's Bruce's turn to cook which always ends with food poisoning. Good news is that there is an Italian place near by and Tony already called in and we are picking it up. Come on," he waved for me to follow. The blazing sun burned my eyes when we walked outside. Turning left we walked down the sidewalk dodging pedestrians.
"Are we like walking on the wrong side of the sidewalk?" I threw out to Steve dodging another pedestrian.
"I have no clue," he chuckled while sliding past a couple of kids.
"Ok I am so done with this," Steve looked at me worried as I jumped into an alley. Shifting quickly I ran back onto the sidewalk.
I released a long low howl. People scattered like cockroaches. Steve was thrown back with surprise then started laughing crazily.
"Oh......my...gosh," his out of breath state was interrupted with giggles," that......was...amazing." My tongue flopped out of the side of my mouth in a humorous way.
"Come on let's go get some Italian." I padded after him swishing my tail left and right. Anyone who got in our way was greeted with a lovely bark.
We passed about four more blocks before finding the Italian place.
"Your name sir?"
"It should be under Stark." The man stopped listening to Steve, instead he stared at me.
"Cool wolf hybrid, what's her name?" He stared at me for a few more seconds then returned his eyes to Steve.
"Umm...," he started at me," Joplin."
"Great name, I'll get your order Mister."
The boy disappeared, his green eyes quickly flashed over me. I looked back over at Steve and nudged his leg. He flashed his pearly whites at me.
I howled at him. First quietly then louder. Low then high pitched. It was a song. My song.
"Hey, Joplin you have to be quiet." I snapped my jaw up and looked at Steve. He was grinning like an idiot.
After a little while the boy came back with multiple backs of food. It was mouth watering.
"Your dog has a beautiful song. How much wolf is she?" Exchanging the food to Steve's hands he replied with, "you could say she's half." The boy confused with wording just smiled and handed the last bag to Steve.
"Have a great day Mister." Steve gave him a small salute and we started our walk back.
After a few minutes of walking down the street, this time no pedestrians in our way, Steve spoke up. "The song was beautiful. I only asked you to stop because people became wary." Looking around quickly I jumped into a nearby ally and changed.
"It's fine and thank you."
He gestured to the bags," want to help?"
"I think you have that covered Captain." Give him a small salute.
"Besides we are here," I turned around and walked backwards until we reached the door. Opening the door for Steve we walked into the cold building. Riding up in the elevator Steve kept looking down trying to hold in a smile. What in the world is wrong with his face? He is probably thinking about food. Food is good.
Ding...
The elevator doors slid open to reveal everyone I mean everyone surrounding the door screaming surprise at the top of there lungs.
"GUYS! Super heightened senses over hear!" I covered my ears and crouched on the floor.
"Hey.. they stopped your good. Sorry." The voice belonged to Clint. I looked up to find him crouched over me smiling, " surprise Snap."
"Snap?"
"You know because you snapped at me. I thought it was better than bitey." We chuckled at each other. He reached out his hand and helped me up.
That's when the doors started to slide shut.
"No, no." I started to reach my hand out but Clint beat me by throwing a small quarter at the open button. Hitting it perfectly, of course.
"Hurry up Quarter." He looked at me crazily.
"If you have a nickname for me I can have one for you. So what's the surprise for?"
"Follow the arrows." In just stared at him.
"Really?" He shook his head. Shrugging I found the first yellow arrow. It was thin and made of cardboard. Written on it was a ten.
I walked past the dinning room to find another with a nine. Another that pointed to a hall I haven't been down. The continued until I was all the way down the hall. I passed one door that had a four on it. Then another left turn onto a another hall. At the end of the hall was a yellow star with a giant one. I opened the door.¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥¥
