'I don't think I'll ever get accustomed to this mode of transportation,' mako sighed
'well city boy if u held onto me maybe you'll enjoy naga's ride,' Korra said turning back and smirking at his discomfort. She had no idea why she suggested that she had no experience with guys she had no idea if that was ok or not. Mako saved her mind from spiral when he tentatively moved his hands to the curve of her waist and held on gently, like if he was afraid to touch her. At this Korra smiled happily to know she wasn't the only awkward one here.
'hm maybe your right this isn't so bad anymore,' he said gently behind her causing Korra to blush in response happy that he couldn't see her face.
'we should be nearing the poorer district of republic city,' he said
Korra guided naga into a slummed up area, that was far less glamorous than the rest of the city she'd seen thus far. The houses in this area were dilapidated structures with fowl smells emanating from within them. Korra could hear the cries of young children and see their sunken faces and bellies. She felt horrible. She was the avatar yet for 17 years she allowed these people to suffer while she lived a life of comfort in the south. The thought made her sick. Mako sensed her distress and started to trace circles on her waist. The gesture comforted Korra and she was able to lean back into him and soak up some of his strength.
'why are the people here living like this?' she asked solemnly
'well, most of the good-paying jobs in the city require bending. For example, I work part-time at the power plant because I can generate electricity. Earth benders get most of the construction work along with being the police force. Water benders are our healers and doctors. But while technology has eased some of the inequality by giving non-benders better job opportunities, the divide still exists and these happen to be the people who have the shorter end of the stick.'
He paused before continuing, 'not to mention the crime from all the bending triads who harass these people for whatever meagre possessions they have since these people can't fight them off.'
Korra decided that as soon as she got back to air temple island she'll have a talk with Tenzin about how to fix this.
***********
Korra and mako were heading back to the gym when mako suggested they stop for lunch first. Korra was grateful since she didn't feel like eating any meat again today as much as she loved Pema's cooking especially her bean curd puffs, she missed meat.
'wanna grab some fire nation food?' he suggested
'sure,'
They left naga in a park across from the restaurant and were crossing the street when they were knocked down by a moped.
Mako got up first and was about to rip into the person until he saw who it was. He immediately shut his mouth and began to blush and stutter. Korra wanted to see why the sudden change in demeanour and got up to see the most beautiful she had ever known. The stranger had long wavy jet black hair that fanned her face perfectly, beautiful jewel-toned green eyes that popped with her purple eye shadow and beautiful full glossy red lips. She was stunning and now Korra was staring too.
'omg imm sooo sorry!' she exclaimed, 'let me make it up to you?'
'umm' mako replied unsure looking to Korra for help and seeing her indecision he decided, 'that'd be nice thank you. I'm mako and this is Korra,' he said
'wait you're the avatar!'
'yup that's me and you are?'
'oh oh right im asami sato,'
