35 | A Problem Bigger Than The Whole Sky
"With such bitterness, no amount of sugar will make your muffins any sweeter." Alli stared at the brown batter which I was currently stirring rigorously to release my stress.
"Like seriously what?" I plonked the mixing bowl on the granite counter. "Every single man on this planet likes 'my' Vittoria."
"Maybe he really just sees her as a friend and he invited her just to end their past rifts." She said, tossing a grape in her mouth.
"He invited the entire finance department. But not Liam." I pointed the spatula at her. "Did I tell you the entire office thinks she's secretly dating him after we broke up- don't laugh, Alli!"
"I'm sorry, you just look too adorable when you're like this."
"And this Oliver! He was invited. I told him to go with her. But he was all about letting her live her life. What the actual fuck! And then he suddenly didn't want to party with his subordinates!"
"Here." Alli passed me the mould, grinning at me. My frustration was entertainment for her.
I dipped a finger into the batter, bringing it up to my lips when her hand swatted mine. "Are you a kid, Mr Mafia King?"
"How else am I supposed to check it?"
She passed me a spoon.
"Okay, mom." I rolled my eyes.
"Whatever." She imitated my gesture. "By the way, what's up with you and Vittoria? I noticed she's been ignoring you ever since she returned from work yesterday."
I tried. I really did. But that treacherous smirk didn't succeed to suppress itself. Alli was a smart woman. I didn't need to use words to tell her that.
"You evil wanker!" She whisper yelled, playfully slapping my arm. "Office sex huh? Noice!"
"Thanks." I sassed.
"You did it with that thing on?" He disgustingly eyed the ring.
"Of course not. I remove it the moment I leave this house."
"I don't understand why you wear it in the first place."
Adding two more spoons of sugar, I poured the batter into the mould. "I told Camila I'd give it a try. Of course, a lie. But she's too delicate right now. Not in a state to think about this complex situation. So yes, I just did that to make her believe in it and buy myself some more time."
"You do know you sound bonkers, don't you?"
"What option do I have, Alli." I sighed, sliding the mould into the oven and in the meantime, cracking eggs in the pan. "I have to think about both of them. Camila matters to me as well."
She opened her mouth to express her displeasure but was interrupted by Vittoria's feet padding against the marble as she footslogged to the kitchen with a slightly worried face.
