•───── ୨❀୧ ─────•Margaret didn't know exactly, but she'd been in that cellar for a few hours. The day was already clear and it was possible to see the sun rays coming through the cracks in the windows. The nurse's stomach rumbled with hunger. She hadn't fed since she left the eighth battalion along with William and Tom.
"William...". That's all the girl thought.
Was the corporal safe? Had he made it to the Devons?
William didn't know, but Margaret hasn't stopped praying for his safety since he left the basement. Her face was one of concern and Lauri felt agonized to see it.
– Tu dois te nourrir. – Margaret heard Lauri say suddenly.
(You need to feed yourself.)The girl had a can of beans extended towards Margaret, but she shook it off. That was for her and the child. Lauri made a face very similar to when a mother stares at her son when he denies the vegetables and opened the can with a makeshift knife.
Margaret smiled uneasily and accepted the food. She ate fast and the entire content came down as the best food in the world. Lauri felt sorry for her, but found it funny the way Margaret desperately ate everything.
– Du bist nutzlos, wie kannst du ihn entkommen lassen?!
The two girls were attentive when they heard the unknown voice. Certainly it was a German for the language.
– Est tut mir leid, dass ich betrunken war!
There were two men talking to each other. Their voices were muffled, but you could hear them. It looked like they were fighting each other over the tone of voice.
Margaret motioned for Lauri to remain silent and she nodded with a worried face. Those men were right next to the two and Margaret was sure they would try to abuse them or even kill them.
Lauri's baby made a small wheeze and Margaret felt a shiver down her spine. Lauri put her hand over the child's mouth to try to keep her silent, but that only scared her more.
– Passen Sie ab jetzt besser auf, oder ich melde Ihr Verhalten dem General! –
(You'd better stay tuned from now on, or I'll report your behavior to the general!)– Warte, hast du das gehört? – The soldier asked after hearing a strange and muffled noise near him. You could swear it came from that house in front of you.
