– Now rest, Corporal. Let's go get your girl. – The general said.
– I can't, sir. I promised her that I would pick her up myself. I can't let them go alone. – William said with conviction. He was exhausted, but he wouldn't break his promise.
The general thought of opposing him, but give up when he saw that he would do nothing.
– Well, hurry up then.Major Hepburn will be loading them all into the truck by now. You can leave, corporal.
– Thank you very much, sir. – William thanked leaving the shelter with the lieutenant.
– Your wife? The nurse. – Joseph asked as he walked with William through the trenches.
The boy just denied smiling. Margaret was a beautiful woman he would no doubt want to get to know more about, but she should agree with that. The lieutenant saw the embarrassed smile on the corporal and found the scene amusing. He knew there was something more to that smile.
Both came out of the trenches after walking a long way and found several men already getting into some trucks. The major was shouting at everyone to hurry to save the girl from danger, for he too had overheard the corporal's conversation with the colonel and felt sorry for the situation.
William got into one of the first trucks and within minutes they were on their way to the destroyed city that was only a kilometer away from them. The major had given the corporal a new helmet and a weapon since he had lost his in the river.
In a few minutes the truck was through town. They had passed the bridge where Schofield had jumped to escape and Schofield had to force his mind to remember where Margaret was hiding.
The soldiers' eyes were on the lookout for any strange movement. Certainly there were more of them than Germans hiding in that city, but they still needed to be on the lookout for an attack. It didn't make sense for a German soldier to risk fighting another 50 English soldiers, but there are people crazy for everything.
