A part of me had hoped that with Octavia showing up, the events would unfold a different way, but deep down, I knew Sam was going to go through with her plan one way or another. I had watched them from where I sat as they spoke. I had seen the various reactions on my sister's face as Sam shared her idea with her. Octavia had looked at me at some point and after that, she had nodded. It was settled.
- "Will you be careful?" -I looked at Octavia as she kneeled in front of me.
- "I will." -she nodded- "This is not the last of us. I have a lot to learn from you."
- "I'm the one who has a lot to learn. And unlearn." -I moved my good arm around her as she hugged me- "You're my sister. Always will be."
- "I love you, big brother." -she pulled back- "I'm sorry about... everything."
- "I'm sorry for thinking I could just come back and lead and protect you again. You're grown, you don't need me to live your life."
- "I'll always need you, Bellamy."
I smiled as she pulled back, watching as she moved away to speak with Indra. My attention was quickly grabbed by Sam's figure stepping toward me and squatting down. I knew she was hurt, but she'd refuse to show it. It eased my mind knowing that it couldn't be a fatal injury because she wasn't covered in blood. After all, I knew if someone had the determination to fake serenity in the face of death, it was Sam.
- "Hold on, okay?"
- "Don't get hit, please."
- "I'll try." -her eyes finally landed on mine, for she had been eyeing my wound- "I'll keep O safe."
- "I know, but look out for yourself as well."
- "I always do."
- "I love you." -I caressed her cheek- "Be careful."
- "I'll see you in a bit."
Sam smiled. No one would have guessed by the expression on her face the ideas that ran through her mind, the things she was capable of doing, what she was about to do. She was truly something else.
She walked toward Gaia and Thea, both of them nodding to her as she looked down at Roan. I could only imagine the kind of pain Sam was in. She leaned down and kissed his forehead. As she straightened herself and rose her chin when she turned around, it was like seeing a vision: she emanated power, self-conviction, and determination.
Sam grabbed her snipper and clenched her jaw as she walked toward the left side of our cluster, running to the nearest set of rocks through the shadows after the lantern's light ran over us. As she go there, she made her way toward the protruding part of the cluster under which Octavia waited for her. My sister took Sam's hand in her and squeezed it, to what Sam answered by nodding before they let go.
