AMYBELLA WAS UPSET BECAUSE OF
Mrs. Andrews' behavior on the night of the performance of her fairy tale, when she called Sebastian a 'savage brute'.

"The Andrews have a horrible judgment! It wasn't Sebastian's fault!"

"Child don't get upset about it, it's no good. Things happened and the Andrew boy is fine, that's the important thing isn't it?" said Rachel placatingly, tapping the girl lightly on the lap. Amybella took another sip of her tea.

"Bash has to put up with a lot. I'd hardly like to be in his shoes when people pass such harsh judgment on you," Amybella said.

"Well, that was to be expected! You don't see these people in a farming area, girl!" Rachel said and sipped her tea. Amybella stifled her next reply and lapsed into silence, not wanting to upset Mrs. Lynde.

"Very well, I'll be on my way. Child finish your embroidery pattern as quickly as you can, then I'll show you how to make it into a cushion!" said the woman as she stood up and walked to the door. The house lapsed into silence as Rachel made her way home and Amybella sighed.

"When you go to school and leave me here whole day with no one to talk to, I keep myself busy." Bash said to Gilbert, it was a few weeks after the incident at the pantomime.

"If you cook and the food ain't have no taste I chew and swallow. I've carried this pain, quiet, into the cold Canadian spring." Gilbert looked at his books, annoyed.

"You know me Blythe. I don't like to complain, so when I say lesser men would've cracked by
now.." Bash talked at the boy as he tried to study.

"Then?" he asked, bored, without lifting his eyes from the pages.

"Exactly." Bash replied and stood a little away from the kitchen door.

"I'm ready. Close the door." The man then said and Gilbert finally raised his eyes.

"Uh, no." the brunette boy said simply.

"You're right. Give it a good slam, I only wanna do this once." Gilbert pointed at the door with his pen.

"This is a very bad idea. Go see a doctor." He got up from his seat at the table.

"For a toothache? Just be my friend. The onliest one in this vast, lonely country." Bash said and Gilbert headed for the door, annoyed. He closed it with a flourish and Bash's tooth fell out of his mouth. Bash winced slightly and then bent over painfully. Gilbert patted him on the shoulder.

"Nothing like a little peace and quiet." He walked out the door and made his way to Amy.

"Good afternoon sir." the blonde girl grinned as the boy stood in front of her door.

"Good afternoon, my lady. May I come in?" He asked with an exaggerated gesture, eliciting a laugh from Amybella. She stepped aside and Gilbert entered. He took off his cap, which he always wore, and smiled at the girl, who had closed the door and now stood in front of him.
