Tiktok has pointed this out a lot and so many xreader stories seem to have the same common character...y/n.
Now when I say common character I don't mean we shouldn't use y/n. Its just an abbreviation BUT why are all y/n characters the same? Its so hard to find a story where Y/N isn't a pick me girl with Stockholm syndrome. Or the shy Mafia's daughter who has some superhuman power to read peoples minds 🤣.
This is different to how she's physically depicted as its more comfortable for readers to have a physically ambiguous y/n however she doesn't need to be 3ft tall and only knows how to put her long blonde hair into a messy bun, and where the same pair of dusty converse sneakers every day. She doesn't have to be a virgin who's most important line is, "please be gentle."YOU'RE WRITING FICTION. You're character can be a little bit more than your average sweetheart.
She can be a ninja
She can be a CEO
She can be a teacher
She can be a high school student with a personality.Fanfics is our way to escape from reality and be anything we want, you can't rely on the basic y/n stereotype alongside a few abbreviations for her favourite food or music. Add something new, exciting...for our sake.
Also make it make sense. Be consistent.
