The night was clear. Thin trunks of cedars and bristly cones of pine trees loomed in the coolness, their leaves rustling and whispering in the gentle passing of a breeze. The sky had deepened black and sapphire, and the full moon's light bathed the earth beneath it in blue.

The breeze quickened and with it swirled the sweet fragrances of wild ginger, trillium, damp moss, and pine-needle covered paths. Somewhere in the distance a fox barked. The hum of cricket sand katydids drowned it out and the rapid chirp of a nightjar joined in a moment later.

Something nearby cracked. The tree branches of three close-growing cedars shook in the wrong direction of the wind. A twig snapped.

The night sounds in this copse ceased. A young girl pushed through the trees, glanced around, wide silver eyes searching every shadowing crevice. The moonlight bleached her ebony locks blue. She pulled a tattered cloak tighter around herself. Then pushed deeper into the trees, the shadows quickly enveloping her small frame. Silence followed in her wake. And then the lull blended into night melody once more.
