Chapter One
Daniel's POV
"Hey Dannyboy! You coming over for the game tonight?" Jane walked up to my locker and ruffled my hair.
"Can't, I have a baseball game." I grabbed my book out of the locker and shut it quickly.
"Oh my gosh. Can I like totally come and watch? Ugh like you in baseball pants would like totally make my day!" Jane joked with me, putting on her best valley girl accent and using way too many hand gestures.
Jane's ice blue eyes sparkled with amusement as she waited for my reaction. A tendril of her golden brown hair slipped out of her ponytail and floated down to her face. I suddenly got a flashback to when we were kids.
The first time I met Jane was on the first day of preschool. She had her hair in a ponytail and her knees were scraped. We laid eyes on each other from across the room and that was it. I was a goner. I was only four but I knew this was someone I'd want to be with the rest of my life. For 13 years we've been inseparable, but all of that would changed this summer.
The joking smile fell off of my tomboy best friend's face.
"What's wrong Daniel?" She brushed the strand of hair out of her eyes and fidgeted the fraying hem of her Boston Celtics shirt. She knew what was coming.
"This is the first summer we're gonna be apart. Hell you're not even gonna be on the continent! I'm gonna have to spend it with all of these dickhead guys around here. I won't have my Janey to watch the games with!"
"Dude, we've spent thirteen summers together, I haven't even seen my mom in 12 years. And you realize you practically just called yourself a dickhead right?" She stifled a laugh as a smirk grew on my face.
"Yeah yeah whatever, I'm just saying it'll be different without you here Janey."
"I know, I'll miss you too. But we still have a month before school ends. Just don't think about that right now. What we should be focusing on is my French. I'm going to be living in Paris for three months and all I know how to say is, 'Please sir, don't eat my dog'"
I cracked a smile as she grinned at me and we started walking down the hallway, against the flow.
"Janey, you don't even have a dog." I said as I cracked a smile.
"Exactly my problem. So you should help me loser." She punched me in the arm and I gripped the place she hurt.
"Fine, I will. And since when did you become the only girl that punches like a guy?"
"Cross country. Every runner needs arm muscle. You should've joined, you feel a bit flabby." Janey pouted and shook her head.
"Flabby? Every girl in this school wants to feel this bicep." I flexed and ran my hand over my tan skin. But Janey paused right before we got to the guys.
"So why don't you let them?" She tilted her head to the side, "Girls are literally throwing themselves at you all the time and not once have gone on a date. What's up?"
Sad thing is it's true. I did practically any sport you could imagine, I had a 5.0 gpa because I was taking all honors classes, and I had the "abs of a god." Hey not my words! It's just they were all too easy, or too I don't know, not Janey.
"Hey I don't see you out and dating." I fired back avoiding the question.
"That's different, every guy here thinks of me as a guy, even if my ass is perfect." Jane shrugged jokingly and rubbed the toe of her worn Converse against the tile floor. "I wouldn't get asked out if I wanted too." She smirked and we started walking again.
Janey turned around and said, "Great now you're looking at my ass aren't you?"
"Hey I think I'm qualified as your best friend of 13 years." I joked and stuck my tongue out at Jane and she did the same. Yep, just like preschool.
We approached the group and came to a stop between Chris and Tristan. Tristan had his arm around a new girl. I recognized her as Clarisse. She was nice, and cute with her brown hair and blue eyes, but she was also sure to get her heartbroken by Tristan. He was a player.
Clarisse seemed excited to see Jane considering the rest of the group was made of Brandon, Jack and Nic.
"Hey Jane! You going to prom?!" Clarisse smiled inquisitively at Jane.
"Ha no, haven't been asked, and I probably won't!" Janey shrugged matter of factly and rubbed her toe on the tile floor again. It was something she always did when she nervous or awkward or embarrassed. That's why the normally white toe of her black converse were a light brown now.
"I'm guessing you're going with Tristan though?" Jane gestured to Tristan's arm and Clarisse smiled.
"Yeah, he just asked today! Hey, why don't you and Daniel go together!"
Oh no. This is the question I had been dreading. Play it cool. Jane turned to me and said, "Hey, why don't we? I mean as friends of course!"
My heart sunk a little.
"Yeah of course. So Janey," I got down on one knee, "my friend I've known forever, will you, go to the Prom with me?"
Janey put her hand to her forhead in a phase of mock faint, and said in a southern belle accent, "Well I never! Of course I will my dear friend!"
Our group erupted in a chorus of pompous "Encores!" and "Bravos!" Which raised quite a few eyebrows in the halls. Screw it who cares.
The bell rang and we all dispersed and I headed off to Chemistry. Clarisse soon caught up.
"Hey Daniel congrats!"
"Oh what, thanks."
"Hey I know you like Jane, but don't worry I won't tell!" Clarisse grinned at me as I felt my face heating up.
"What no, she's my best friend. She's like a sister." I blurted out all too quickly.
Clarisse raised her eyebrow at me. "Whatever you say Daniel!" She patted me on the back bye and headed off to her class as I reached the door of the chem lab.
Well now my cover was blown. Shit.
