Chapter 4

Daniel's POV

I drove up to the big yellow house that Janey (and me basically) had lived in her whole life. I parked in front with my old blue truck and heard my parents pull up behind me. My little sister Angela was so excited that Jane and I were going to prom together because she was convinced Janey and I were in love. She just didn't know that that kind of love only went one way.

I looked onto the large belt of bright green grass that was in front of her house. As I gazed at it a bit longer, a memory began to play in my mind from when Janey and I were six.

FLASHBACK

"You're just a girl. You can't play with us!" Tristan sneered. "Come on Daniel."

I stood my ground in the grass next to the girl with pigtails: Jane.

"Or are you a girl too?" Tristan taunted me.

"I'm playing with Jane." I crossed my small arms across my chest and planted my feet closer to Janey.

"Girl lover! Girl lover!" Chris called.

"Hey! Don't be so mean to my best friend!" With that Jane ran over to Tristan and Chris and pushed them to the dirt. She grinned as she skipped over to me, her pig tails bopping up and down with each bound. I greeted her with wide eyes and an open mouth.

"Come on Daniel, let's go play soccer." With that she grabbed my hand and pulled me into her backyard, ignoring the calls of the boys.

FLASHBACK END

"Well are you just gonna sit there or are you gonna pick up your date?!" Angela called to me through the window.

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" I picked up the corsage I got for Jane and pushed the door open, stepping onto the hard pavement.

My family followed in suit, a step or two behind me as I made my way up the path to their big white door. I rang the doorbell and not a second later her dad opened the door.

"Daniel! So great to see you, you're looking handsome! God I remember that first day in preschool and now you're going to prom together. God damn I'm getting old." He chuckled and led us inside.

"Can't tell one bit Pop!" I answered back and he replied with a stark laugh and a pat on the back.

"Hello Diana, Hector! How are you?" Jane's stepmom welcomed them.

"Hi Lisa! We're great!"

"Lovely! Let me just get Jane down here and we can get you two on your way!" Lisa hurried up the stairs and turned the corner.

"Daniel I'm so glad you're taking Jane to prom because I know you won't try anything, right?"

"Of course not sir! We're going to Tristan's for a party after and then Janey is staying over at my house for a movie night, alright?"

He broke out in a grin, "Of course Daniel. I know you'll take care of her. And besides, she could probably beat up half the male population on her own!"

The room chorused in laughs as I awaited Jane. Then Lisa descended the stairs.

"Here she is!"

I looked to the top of the stairs and a beautiful, gorgeous, goddess-like girl stood there.

"Holy shit." I muttered under my breath

Jane started to descend the stairs, taking careful steps so as not to fall in her heels. I wonder how someone got her in a dress and heels. Had to have been Tom Brady, don't know anyone else who could've.
