Chapter 3
Daniel's POV
I slid the red helmet onto my head and picked up my bat. We were playing our rivals today and it was the last game of the baseball season. This game would determine the champion of the high school league this year and I was up to bat in 2.
I walked out of the dugout and looked out into the small section of bleachers behind home plate. One side was all red and white, and the other was all blue and yellow. Except in the blue and yellow sections saw one person dressed all in red.
Janey.
My Janey, always the troublemaker.
I grinned as I went into the batting cage to warm up. I heard a voice call to me, "Hey loser! I like your ass in those pants!"
"Hey loser! Who doesnt?" I called back chuckling at mine and Jane's interaction.
One more person up to bat before me. Derek was up now and there were runners on first and second. Just a single and that would leave the bases loaded for me. His first swing was a strike. His second was a foul ball that went back into the crowd. His third swing was perfect. It hit right on the ball and he made it to first.
Now I was up.
Bases loaded.
Bottom of the ninth.
Down by 3.
Two outs.
Psh no pressure.
I took one more look back to the crowd to find Jane, but I didn't see her anywhere.
Thanks Janey.
I stepped up to the plate and tapped my bat on the plate, dust sputtering off in all directions. I brought the bat up behind my ear and stared directly at the pitcher. My focus completely on the ball.
The rival pitcher brought the ball up, winding up his throw. He released and it came hurtling towards me. I swung with everything I had and heard the loud,
*CRACK*
As the ball went flying off of my bat, up and past the outlines.
Cheers erupted behind me as I started to run the bases.
Holy shit.
Holy shit.
HOLY SHIT.
I had just scored the winning run of the game.
As my feet touched home base once again, my team tackled me. A variety of whoops and shouts were exchanged before we broke apart.
Our coach congratulated us before we dispersed to go see the crowd. I frantically looked for Jane. Where was she? And why did she live during my game?
"Great job Daniel! That was awesome how you scored the last goal!" I heard a shrill voice call out behind me.
I cringed at the voice I would recognize anywhere. It was Jane's clingy step sister Mona.
I regrettably turned around and thanked her. Not even bothering to mention that it was a "run" not a "goal."
"So do you wanna come over tonight Daniel? We could have like a celebration." Mona smirked at me but I just shuddered, thinking of what her idea of a celebration was.
"Sorry Jane and I are hanging out tonight, speaking of her, do you know where she went?"
"Ugh yeah her, umm she got hit in the face with a ball near the end of the game or whatever. I don't even see how you like can stand to be around her. She's like a guy. Why don't you just ask me out already." Mona turned her face in disgust as so did mine.
