Chapter 6
Jane's POV
Monday, the beginning of Spring finals week. Also known as the last week of school.
Everything seemed in order: freshmen excitedly ran through the halls, happy over the prospect of soon, not being the youngest ones, sophomores complained about studying even though they really had nothing to worry about, and Juniors complained about studying because they actually had to.
It had been about a week since prom night and Daniel and I had barely spoken. We'd had fights before but those had blown over. But this wasn't a fight, this was nothing so why were we acting like it was such a big deal?
I waited at my locker, looking across the hall waiting for Danny to walk to his. I was ending this friendship hiatus right now.
I watched as he walked up and grabbed some books from his locker. A girl then proceeded to walk up to him, I think she was a sophomore, and start flirting. Normally I would laugh but something else was filling me now, could it be jealousy?
The girl flirted shamelessly and Danny smiled politely as she gave him her number on a little slip of paper. Only I saw as he slipped it into the trash can nearby as she turned the corner in the hall.
"Ok Danny you're coming over tonight for our annual study session right?"
Danny jumped, surprised at my voice then smiled when he saw it was me.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world." He pulled me into a hug and I was suddenly aware of how good he smelled. New cologne or was I just tripping out?
"Let's never not talk again, okay?" I nodded in agreement as he shut his locker and the bell rang.
"Good luck in English Dannyboy" I winked as I began to walk backwards down the hall, away from him. My red converse squeaked against the worn, tile floor as Danny laughed and shook his head.
"Good luck in Math you weirdo." He saluted me and we parted ways. I turned around, a smile still painted on my lips and put on my headphones as I continued to walk to my death, I mean my IB math final.
My gaze stayed locked on the dirty rubber toes of my shoes as my feet flew over the floor hastily, staring at the ankles of the other stressed teens swarming the hallways and heading off to their very first finals of the spring semester. The hallways which normally buzzed with energy like a beehive, were now silent save for the shuffling of the nervous feet of my classmates. As the week went on, the noise would grow along with the excitement of the impending summer months, but I still hung somewhere on the nervous side for what this summer might bring.
This was first ever summer that I would spend entirely away from home, away from Danny and the boys, and my dad. And the first time that I would see my mother in twelve years.
I know it sounds crazy, and it wasn't like we hadn't corresponded, because we did by phone, Skype, email, carrier pigeon or whatever, every week, but I hadn't actually seen her in ages. Natasha (my mom) was some high and mighty fashion executive somewhere in the haute couture world of Paris, which kept her busy and traveling and designing and curating year round. It was the job of a lifetime that ultimately led to her leaving my dad, and me, behind in the states, and honestly I never really blamed her. She was so young when she had me, I know I wasn't in her life plan that she had made with my dad. I know that she loved me, and I know that she had loved my dad, but even though I was small I could tell that he wanted more than anything for her to be happy.
Now, a seventeen year old "not really woman but maybe heading in that direction" tomboy of a girl, I would be jetting off to Europe for the summer in just 3 short days. As I stepped into the classroom I'd spent the last year slaving over calculus in, I took a deep breath, partially to calm myself as I sat down for my exam, and partially to remind myself to stay calm as I knew my whole world would be changing in only a matter of days.

"Janey, for the millionth time, sleeping on your textbook is not adequate studying. You can't just absorb the information through the pages!" Danny laughed and smacked my head that I had laid down on my history book just a minute prior.
"Just a, just a little nyaaaaappp" I yawned out at him as I swatted his hands away and sunk deeper into the table, nuzzling my head in between the pages talking about Sancho Panza and Don Quixote.
It was a hair past 1am and Danny and I had been studying Spanish for hours upon hours.
"Danny if I don't know it by now, I never will"
"Nope, not accepting it. I am acing this Spanish exam tomorrow and so are you!"
Danny pulled the book out from under me and my head hit the desk with a "thud." I let out a low groan and rubbed my forehead as I raised my eyes to my eye's to meet Danny's smile with a glare. He laughed at me and kissed my forehead before I started to laugh and swat him away.
I whipped out my pristine, color-coded flash cards from my backpack and held them over my face, wriggling my eyebrows at my best friend sitting next to me.
"Ok fine Professor Danny, time to ace this exam!"
