Chapter 2
Janet's POV
"Dad it's not that big of a deal it's just prom. I'm sure I have a dress I can use already. I don't want to go to the mall!"
"Now I may be a man, but even I know that a girl's first prom is a right of passage and whether you like it or not, we're getting you a dress. And since when does my little Jane Brain own a single dress?"
"Well I don't exactly..." My voice trailed off as I thought of a better argument as to why I shouldn't go to the mall.
"We'll I'd be happy to take you shopping pumpkin!" My stepmom Lisa chimed in. The words coming out of her cherry red lips and her heavily mascaraed eyes lighting up at the idea. I mean it's not that I hated her, we just weren't similar. At all. She was stilettos and make up, and I was converse and mud. But I knew my dad would love the thought of us "bonding."
"Well I guess..." I looked up at my dad to see him grinning proudly. Yep just as I thought. I could do this for him, he'd done so much for me.
We arrived at the mall in Lisa's yellow bug. I cringed at the thought of people seeing me get out of this girly car. But luckily since it was a Thursday afternoon, the mall was scarce of people.
I heard the click clack of Lisa's heels on the pavement as she raced to keep up with my fast pace.
"Oh this is so exciting isn't it! Your first dress oh my. Well we could even get you a few more clothes to get you out of this boyish stage you've been in!"
"I think I'm good. One dress is enough." I smiled weakly at my stepmom's giddy face. The spark in her smile fell but she soon regained it.
"Well we can get you some new shoes too! All you wear is those ratty old ones. How about heels to go with your dress! And make up, and a purse and oh so many things!"
"Umm well I think I was just gonna wear my converse. But sure we can get make up and a purse!" I said this last part as an offering, a compromise.
"Oh we'll I guess, but at least let me get you a new pair!"
"Sure." I smiled at her again as her smile widened even more, if possible. I reached my hand out to grip the metal handle of the mall door, warmed by a day's worth of sunshine.
The first store we went to was a total bust. Every dress was pink and fluffy which seemed to excite Lisa more than it should've.
"Oh hon at least try one one on!" Her eyes scanned the room and they landed on a short pink dress whose skirt was made of feathers and the top ruffles and jewels.
"This is cute!" She picked it up and reached it out to me, her blue eyes widening expectantly.
"Mmm no thanks. Let's try somewhere else." I turned on my heel and headed into a store a couple of doors down.
A cool rush of air swept past me as I entered the new dress shop. I started sifting through the first rack. All black, not really my thing. Next was all pink. Then blue. I lost track of how many racks I went through, until I finally reached the last one. I had lost all hope of finding a dress by now. That is until I laid eyes on a pale blue and pale green dress. It had a form-fitting bodice and a looser skirt. There was a slit above the knee, and there were alternating sections of blue and green panels. This could work.
"Lisa, I found one!"
"That's great hon! Try it on!"
I slipped into the closest dressing room and slid the curtain closed. I couldn't believe I was actually excited for this. Sure I'd worn dress before, but not since my parents' divorce. When my mom left it was just daddy and I, and he let me dress however I wanted. I think he was actually happy with the lack of interest from boys.
I swiftly unzipped the dress, and stepped in. The fabric was smooth and cool against my warm skin. I zipped it back up and looked in the mirror.
My hand snaked up to my mouth as it dropped open.
"Holy Shit."
"Is everything okay?" Lisa called
"Yeah! I'm coming out!"
I stepped out of the dressing room and stood in front of Lisa.
"What do you think?" I asked, wanting her opinion.
"I think it looks beautiful, oh my that's just gorgeous!"
"Really?" I asked her, still a bit in disbelief.
"Of course hon! My your legs are so perfect for that dress! Guess all of those sports paid off!"
If you hadn't guessed already, Lisa wasn't the most sporty person. She thought that they were for, we'll boys. But she was a pretty good stepmom. Even though we weren't similar AT ALL, she was still really supportive of me and all of my sports. Besides it's not like I had anyone else to act motherly to me anyway, well besides Daniel's mom of course.
Since Daniel and I had been friends since basically the dawn of time, Diana was like my second mom. When my parents got divorced and my mom moved back to Paris, Diana was there. I can barely remember a time when my dad and Diana weren't there.
Then Lisa came around. She was actually a really great stepmom! It was her daughter that I didn't like. She was in my grade but she was a total bitch. She had a fake tan , blonde hair with roots, and beady brown eyes that were heavily doused in mascara, eye liner, and eyeshadow. Besides her fake appearance, she was so clingy and determined to be "popular" Whenever Daniel was over she couldn't keep her hands off of him. Daniel would just stand there not knowing what to do while I would just snicker at his predicament.
Well back to realityyyyy
I slipped back into the dressing room and took my phone out.
TO DANNYBOY: Found a dress!
I attached a picture of the dress and sent it off. I minute later as I was pulling my shirt back on my phone beeped.
TO JANEY: My Janey in a dress? Is the world ending???
TO DANNYBOY: Haha very funny loserrr.
TO JANEY: Fine hater =P
TO DANNYBOY: Ugh not the hipster terms again...
TO JANEY: What can I say? YOLO
TO DANNYBOY: Stop it
TO JANEY: I can't, I have too much swag
TO DANNYBOY: Well I'm going now...Peace out brotha! (See I can do it too)
TO JANEY: Mmm no I'm not feeling it. Your text didn't have that badass vibe it needed. Cya Janey!
I smiled and shook my head while putting phone back in my jean pocket. Daniel was such a dork sometimes. But we were dorks together. And that's all that really matters. Just two best friends.
Right?
